Hey everyone! We’re planning a big cross-country road trip in our Audi Q7 this summer, and with two kids and a dog, the trunk space is already looking tight. I’m looking for the best roof rack setup that won't compromise the ride quality. I’ve been looking at the Thule WingBar Edge versus the Yakima JetStream, but I’m worried about wind noise on the highway and whether they’ll interfere with the panoramic sunroof. Does anyone have experience with the OEM Audi base bars, or should I stick with an aftermarket brand for better compatibility with a large cargo box? I’d love to hear what setups are working best for your Q7 family adventures!

In my experience, you definitely wanna go with the Thule WingBar Edge setup for ur Q7. I've been running them for about four years now across two different Audis and they're seriously the gold standard for keeping things quiet on the highway.

Sooo, here's the deal with the panoramic sunroof—it's a tight fit. Honestly, most of these low-profile bars like the WingBar Edge or even the Yakima JetStream Black 60" Crossbars sit pretty low to the roof for aerodynamics. If you mount a big box like the Thule Motion XT XXL Cargo Carrier, the mounting claws might get in the way of the glass if you try to tilt it open. I learned that the hard way lol. I basically just don't open the sunroof when the box is on. Better safe than having a shattered glass panel, right??

I've tried the OEM Audi bars too, but tbh they sit way higher and look kinda like truck racks. They definitely won't hit the sunroof, but the wind whistle at 75mph is annoying as heck. Plus, the Thule stuff is just better if you're switching accessories later. If ur worried about space for the dog and kids, definitely grab a set of Thule Wingbar Edge 9593 with the specific Thule Flush Rail Fit Kit 4033. It looks factory-clean and handles the weight of a massive box without any wobbling. Just watch those clearance heights in parking garages! Anyway, hope the road trip goes well, gl!

Ok so for your Q7, safety is literally EVERYTHING when the family is on board!! Honestly, I recommend the Audi Genuine Zubehor Base Carrier Bars because they’re engineered specifically for your roof rails—zero guesswork on torque. But if you want something super sleek, the Rhino-Rack Vortex StealthBar is amazing and highkey quiet! I've used both over the years and the OEM bars definitely feel the most SECURE for a heavy cargo box. Good luck!!

Honestly, if you're worried about the budget and want to save some cash for the actual trip, I'd suggest checking out the Yakima JetStream Black 60 inch Crossbars combined with Yakima TimberLine Towers.

I just started getting into the whole roof rack thing and here's what I found:

* The Yakima JetStream setup is usually around $500-600 total, which is like $100 cheaper than the Thule stuff.
* If you're really looking to save, the CargoLoc 2-Piece 52-Inch Aluminum Roof Top Cross Bar is a super budget pick at like $70, but it might be a bit loud at highway speeds tbh.
* For the box, I'm pretty satisfied with the JEGS Rooftop Cargo Carrier 18 Cubic Feet since it's basically half the price of the big name brands but still fits a ton of gear.

It's been working well for me so far and no complaints about the sunroof clearance on my end! So yeah, definitely check those out if you don't wanna drop a grand on just the bars. Good luck!

Respectfully, I'd consider another option before you pull the trigger on those big names. Honestly, I've spent way too much time doing market research on this, and while the others are solid, they’re pricey!

I’m a huge fan of the Kuat Grip 6 for the actual racks or even looking at the Whispbar Flush Bar Roof Rack System if you can still find them.

* **Whispbar:** Seriously the quietest tech on the market, basically silent even at 80mph.
* **Kuat:** High-end build quality that rivals Thule but feels more unique.

I once did a 2,000-mile loop with a different setup and the whistling drove me CRAZY, so getting that aerodynamic profile right is everything! good luck!
