Hey everyone! I finally pulled the trigger on a new Audi RS 6 Avant performance, and while the cargo space is impressive for a wagon, I’m planning some serious road trips this winter and definitely need a solid roof rack setup. Since this car is such a beast on the highway, my biggest concern is finding a system that can handle high speeds without creating an unbearable amount of wind noise or whistling.
I’ve been leaning toward the Thule WingBar Edge because of its low-profile look, but I’ve also seen the OEM Audi base carrier bars. My main worry with the factory ones is that they seem to sit a bit high, which might ruin the sleek silhouette of the RS 6. I’m planning to mount a Thule Motion XT Alpine box for my skis, and eventually a couple of mountain bikes come spring. Does anyone have experience with how these systems affect the sunroof clearance or the paint finish on the rails? I’m also curious if anyone has tried the Yakima Whispbar series on this specific model.
I really want something that looks like it belongs on a performance car rather than an afterthought. For those of you already running a setup, what do you think is the best balance between aesthetics and functionality for the RS 6?
yo, congrats on the RS 6! that car is literally a dream. honestly, i've been doing a ton of market research for my own wagon lately cuz i’m also paranoid about wind noise. you might find this useful - check out the "Audi RS6 Avant (C8) Roof Rack Thread" over on the **Audizine forums**. it’s a gold mine for photos showing exactly how different setups sit on the rails. from what i've gathered, here’s a quick breakdown of the market options: - Thule WingBar Edge 9595B: like reply #1 said, this is pretty much the gold standard for aesthetics. it looks integrated rather than bolted on. but yeah, it's pretty pricey and i've read the sunroof clearance is super tight... maybe dont tilt it open while the rack is on just in case??
- Yakima RailBar Roof Rack System: this is basically the rebranded Whispbar. it's usually cheaper than the Thule stuff and some reviews say it’s actually quieter at high speeds. it’s a solid value play if ur not set on the Thule brand name.
- Rhino-Rack Vortex StealthBar: i guess this is a sleeper pick. it’s very low profile and has a unique rubber strip that helps with noise. i mean, it looks pretty sick on performance cars.
- XPEL Ultimate Plus Paint Protection Film: pro tip for the paint concern... basically just buy a small roll of this and put strips under where the rack feet touch. it'll save ur rails from scratches and it's basically invisible. i'm still kinda new to this but from everything i’ve read, the Thule Motion XT Alpine you mentioned (good choice tho!) combined with the Thule bars is the most popular combo for a reason. it just looks right. gl with the build! 👍
late to the party but congrats on the beast! if ur looking for value, check out Yakima RailBar. it's basically the updated Whispbar and way cheaper than Thule. pro tip: check eTrailer.com's fitment guides... they literally film installs on these rails so u can see the sunroof clearance before buying. basically, ur getting the same aero tech without the "Audi tax." honestly, i've tried many and Yakima's T-slot is just easier to use lol. gl!
I've only had my RS 6 for about a year, so I'm still kind of a newbie with all the gear, but I've already swapped my setup twice because I'm so picky about the look, you know? It's basically been a trial and error process for me to find that perfect balance. Here is what I've tried so far from my own experience: • Rhino-Rack Vortex StealthBar - These look pretty amazing because they sit so flush with the rails. Tbh, they're probably the sleekest ones I've seen, but the clearance is so tight that I don't even try to vent the sunroof anymore. I'm honestly terrified I'll crack the glass if I forget they're on there. • Inno Aero Base XS100 - I tried these next and they're a bit more user-friendly. They're still low-profile but feel a bit more secure when I'm hitting highway speeds. The wind noise is pretty minimal, which is a huge plus for me on those long drives. One thing I've noticed over the last few months is that grit and road salt really like to hide under the mounting feet. I'm always worried it's going to mess up the finish on the rails. Does anyone else take theirs off to clean the roof every time it rains, or am I just being paranoid? I'd love to hear if the paint holds up well long-term!
Sooo I tried the factory bars first but honestly, the wind noise was literally unbearable at high speeds. I eventually swapped to the Thule WingBar Edge 9595B and it’s way quieter. * The Thule Motion XT Alpine fits perfectly.
* Watch ur sunroof clearance; it's tight. Lower setups look sick but I dont like how they restrict the vent... lesson learned! gl
Solid advice 👍
Quick reply while I have a sec because I feel your pain on this. Honestly, the struggle to find something that doesnt ruin the lines or the paint is so frustrating... I have been dealing with this for ages and it never gets easier. You really might want to consider the long-term wear on those roof rails though. Be super careful because even the high-end systems can vibrate just enough to scuff the finish, and honestly, seeing scratches on an RS 6 is just heartbreaking. Also, I would suggest being really paranoid about that sunroof clearance. Everyone loves the low-profile look but if that box flexes even a tiny bit at high speeds, you are looking at a shattered glass panel. It is such a gamble and it drives me crazy how much we have to worry about this just to carry some gear. Just make sure you double-check everything twice before you head out... better safe than sorry with a car like this.
