Any suggestions for high-quality dash cams for the BMW iX?

I recently took delivery of my BMW iX and I’m absolutely loving the silent drive and tech, but I’m feeling a bit nervous about driving without a dash cam. Given the sleek interior and all those sensors near the rearview mirror, I’m really looking for something high-quality that won't look like an eyesore or interfere with the driver assistance systems.

I’ve looked into the BMW Drive Recorder, but since it only captures short clips during incidents, I’d prefer a dedicated system that offers continuous recording and a solid parking mode. My main concern is the installation; I really want a clean, OEM-plus look without wires dangling everywhere, and I’m a bit worried about how a hardwire kit might interact with the iX's sensitive 12V battery system.

Has anyone here installed a BlackVue or Vantrue in their iX, or perhaps the BMW Advanced Car Eye 3.0? I’m willing to spend around $400-$600 for the right setup. Does anyone have recommendations for a dual-channel setup that integrates well with the iX’s unique cabin layout without triggering any battery discharge warnings?

yo, congrats on the new iX! honestly, i feel u on the drive recorder thing... it's just not enough for peace of mind. in my experience, after testing a few setups over the years, you really want something that looks OEM. For your situation, I would suggest checking out the Fitcamx Dash Cam for BMW iX 4K Front and Rear. it basically replaces the plastic trim behind your mirror so there are literally zero wires showing. it looks factory and doesnt mess with the sensors at all.

if you want the absolute best parking mode tho, i've been running the BlackVue DR970X-2CH Plus 4K Dash Cam with 256GB microSDXC for a while now. i was worried about the 12V battery drain too, but if you pair it with a BlackVue B-130X Ultra Dash Cam Battery Pack, it bypasses the iX's sensitive electronics completely so no error codes! it's a bit of an investment but seriously worth it for the clean look. hope that helps, gl!

Check out the BlackVue DR970X-2CH Plus 4K Dash Cam! I've been researching this forever and it's basically the gold standard for tech like the iX. Since you're worried about the battery, I'd HIGHLY recommend pairing it with the BlackVue B-130X Power Magic Ultra Battery Pack. It completely bypasses the iX's sensitive 12V system so you won't get those annoying discharge warnings!! It's a bit pricey, but sooo worth it for the peace of mind. gl!

Curious about one thing: you doing the install yourself? I tried my own setup and it was honestly such a headache:

- Constant battery warnings
- Damaged interior clips

Seriously, the iX is way too sensitive.

I spent ages researching this and decided on the Thinkware U3000 Dual Channel 4K Dash Cam specifically for its parking mode. The built-in radar is the big selling point for me... it basically keeps the camera in a low-power sleep state until it detects motion, which solves the whole 12V battery drain fear without needing a massive external battery pack like the others suggested. A few thoughts on it:

  • Best-in-class power consumption for parking.
  • Excellent 4K clarity.
  • Doesnt get as hot as the BlackVue units in the sun. Installing it was okay, but it reminded me of when I tried to hardwire a radar detector in my old 5-series. I ended up blowing a fuse and spent the whole weekend driving around with no instrument cluster because I couldnt find a replacement fuse on a Sunday. It was actually kind of peaceful not seeing how fast I was going, which is honestly how I feel driving the iX sometimes. The silence is so addictive that I find myself taking the long way home just to listen to some lo-fi tracks. My wife thinks Im crazy because a 10-minute trip takes 30 now. But yeah, the Thinkware is a solid choice if you want reliability.
