Best aftermarket wheel options for a BMW Z4 Roadster?

Hey everyone! I’ve been the proud owner of an E85 BMW Z4 Roadster for a couple of years now, and while I absolutely love the driving dynamics, I’m starting to feel like the stock wheels are looking a bit dated. I really want to refresh the look of the car and maybe shed some unsprung weight in the process to sharpen up the handling.

I’ve been scouring forums and looking at countless gallery threads, but I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by the options. My Z4 is currently on the standard 17-inch style 103 wheels, and I’m considering moving up to 18s or maybe even 19s if the ride quality doesn't suffer too much. I’m really aiming for that 'OEM+' look—something that looks like it could have come from the factory but with a much more aggressive stance.

One of my biggest concerns is fitment. I’m not looking to roll my fenders or deal with constant rubbing, so I’m trying to figure out the sweet spot for offsets (ET) and widths. I’ve seen some beautiful setups with Apex ARC-8s and some VMR wheels that look great, but I’m curious if anyone has experience with those or perhaps something a bit more unique like some BBS or Rotiform options.

Budget-wise, I’m looking to spend around $1,500 to $2,000 for the set, excluding tires. I live in an area with decent roads, but I still want something durable enough to handle the occasional pothole without bending instantly.

For those of you who have swapped out your Z4 wheels, what setup are you running? Specifically, what wheel size, width, and offset would you recommend for a flush look without needing spacers, and did you notice a significant change in how the car feels on the road?

For your situation, I'd go with the Apex ARC-8 18x8.5 ET38 squared or staggered with 18x9.0 ET41 in the rear. I've been running these for a while and honestly, the weight savings are HUGE—you really feel it in the steering. Plus, they fit like a glove without any rubbing or fender rolling. It hits that OEM+ vibe perfectly. Within ur $2,000 budget, it's basically the best bang for your buck for durability and style. Ngl, the 18s are the sweet spot for ride quality too!!

Seconding the recommendation above for the Apex stuff! If youre looking for the absolute best value, Apex ARC-8 18x8.5 ET38 is basically the gold standard for the E85.

I compared those against VMR V710 18x8.5 ET35 and honestly, while the VMRs are cheaper (usually around $1,100), the Apex wheels are flow-formed and way lighter, which really helps the suspension travel. You can get the Apex set for about $1,400-1,500 if you catch a group buy, so its right in ur budget.

Another solid option is the BBS SR 18x8 ET32 if you want that brand prestige, but they're a bit heavier. I'd stick with 18s tho... 19s look sick but the ride gets sooo harsh on anything but perfect pavement. gl!

Sooo I actually went through this exact struggle with my Z4 a while back. If ur looking for that OEM+ vibe but want something a bit different than the usual Apex stuff, I'd highkey look at VMR V710 18x8.5 ET35. They look basically like the CSL wheels but with a slightly more aggressive concave.

I run a squared setup because it makes the handling way more neutral and lets u rotate tires. At ET35, they sit almost perfectly flush without any rubbing issues on the stock fenders, even if ur lowered a bit. If u want to go wider in the back, VMR V710 18x9.5 ET45 is a solid bet for the rear. Honestly, 19s look cool but the ride gets kinda harsh on potholes, so 18s are the sweet spot imo. Plus, they're super durable and fit ur $2k budget easily lol. gl!

Ok so I saw this earlier and honestly I have to politely disagree with the others about only looking at the two main brands everyone always suggests!!! I have been doing a bunch of market research lately and even though I am still kind of a beginner with the technical side of things, I think you should look at the bigger picture.

  • You should really just look at anything from Enkei because they are famous for being light and super strong for the price.
  • If you want that high end look then just get some BBS wheels and call it a day because you cant go wrong with them on a BMW and they will hold there value well.
  • Forgestar is also a really cool direction to go in since they do more custom stuff which might help with your fitment worries. Are you totally sure about 18s or 19s though because I would be so scared of bending a rim on a pothole??? Just sticking to a big name brand is basically the best way to make sure your getting something durable. I am still trying to learn how the offset stuff works too but what do you think about those other brands instead???
