Hey everyone! I just took delivery of my new G87 M2 in Brooklyn Grey, and while I absolutely love the aggressive lines, I feel like it’s missing that extra bit of 'oomph' that only carbon fiber can provide. I’ve been browsing around, but the sheer amount of options out there is a bit overwhelming.
I’m trying to decide between going full M Performance parts from the dealer or looking at some of the high-end aftermarket brands like MHC, Vorsteiner, or ADRO. I’m particularly interested in starting with a front lip and a more aggressive rear diffuser to fill out the back end. I’ve seen some cheaper options online, but I’m really worried about the weave pattern matching the factory carbon roof and, more importantly, the fitment. I’d hate to drill into a brand-new bumper only to have a weird gap on the edges or a finish that yellows after six months.
I’m also debating on mirror caps and whether the dry carbon look is actually worth the premium over the standard wet carbon. I want to make sure I’m getting the best quality in terms of UV protection and durability. For those of you who have already started modding your G87, what have been your favorite carbon fiber additions so far, and which brands would you say offer the best fitment for the price?
Honestly, I feel u on the Brooklyn Grey G87—it’s such a killer color but it definitely needs some carbon to pop. In my experience, I’ve always been super cautious about fitment cuz there is nothing worse than seeing a gap on a brand new car. I ended up playing it safe and going with BMW M Performance Carbon Fiber Front Attachment G87 M2 and the matching BMW M Performance Carbon Fiber Rear Diffuser G87 M2.
I was highkey worried about the weave matching the roof too, and honestly, going OEM is the only way to be 100% sure the patterns line up perfectly. Plus, you get that peace of mind with the UV coating not yellowing after a summer in the sun. If you’re looking at aftermarket tho, MHC Plus Edition 1 Carbon Fiber Front Lip G87 M2 is probably the best bang for your buck in terms of fitment.
Few things to keep in mind:
* Dry carbon is definitely worth the premium imo. It’s lighter and usually has a much cleaner matte-ish finish that looks more 'race' than the shiny wet stuff.
* For the mirror caps, I went with BMW M Performance Carbon Fiber Mirror Caps and the install was a breeze.
* Seriously, dont cheap out on the diffuser. Some of those budget ones have weird tabs that snap off during install.
Basically, if you want it to look factory-perfect, stick to the M Performance catalog. It's more expensive but I’m super satisfied with how mine turned out... no gaps, no regrets! gl with the build dude! 👍
Ok so before I give advice, whats ur total budget for this first stage? Honestly, for a cost-conscious build that still looks high-end, the TRE ID-01 Carbon Fiber Front Lip for BMW G87 M2 is a killer alternative to the overpriced OEM stuff. Also, dry carbon is 100% worth it for the long-term UV protection if ur car is outside a lot. You planning to DIY the install or hit a shop?? peace
Quick reply while I have a sec! Honestly, been modding BMWs for over 15 years and I've seen it all—from the yellowing eBay junk to the high-end boutique stuff. I learned the hard way on my old F82 that "budget" carbon is basically a ticking time bomb for UV damage and bad fitment.
You might find this useful—check out the technical threads over at Bimmerpost or browse the curated kits at IND Distribution. They do some of the best quality control in the industry for the G87. Technical wise, dry carbon is actually worth the premium because it's pre-impregnated with resin (pre-preg), meaning it's way lighter and wont warp or yellow under heat like cheaper wet carbon does.
I'd highly recommend looking at the ADRO G87 M2 Carbon Fiber Front Lip for that aggressive winglet look, or the Vorsteiner VRS Aero Carbon Fiber Rear Diffuser if you want to really fill out the back end. Basically, stick to pre-preg if you want that OEM weave match with ur roof. Better to cry once over the price than cry twice when your clear coat starts peeling lol. gl!
Basically, I spent months doing a deep dive into the market before I touched my car. Its honestly a bit of a gamble because some of those high-end boutique brands are actually just finishing parts that come from the same overseas factories as the cheaper ones, just with better quality control. I spent forever looking at spreadsheets trying to figure out who actually makes their own stuff vs who is just a middleman. In my current setup, I ended up mixing a couple of different sources. What I learned the hard way is that even if the weave is the same 2x2 pattern, the thickness of the clear coat varies like crazy between manufacturers. One piece I got had this really deep, 3D look while the other looked kind of flat. It drove me nuts for a week until I just got used to it. If youre a perfectionist, mixing brands is definitely a risk. I dont know the exact science behind it, something about the vacuum bagging process I think, but the weight difference between the pieces was actually pretty noticeable too. Just make sure whoever you go with has a solid warranty against yellowing because that sun damage is no joke once it starts... what are you leaning towards?
@Reply #4 - good point! Been thinking about this for a bit. I actually disagree with going the safe OEM route if you really want that aggressive pop. In my experience, the factory stuff looks a bit too subtle once you see it in the wild next to some of the high-end boutique kits. I learned the hard way with my last car that fitment guaranteed usually comes with a catch. I spent a whole Saturday wrestling with a diffuser that just wouldnt clip in right because the mold was slightly warped. If you want that real presence, I would suggest looking at:
