I recently took delivery of my BMW iX xDrive50, and with my first winter with an EV fast approaching, I’m getting a bit nervous about the drop in temperature and how it might impact range and comfort. I live in an area where we get a fair amount of snow and consistent freezing temperatures, so I want to make sure I’m fully prepared before the first storm hits.

I’ve already been looking into dedicated winter tire sets—specifically considering the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 SUV—but I’m wondering what else is considered 'essential' for this specific model. For instance, are the BMW all-weather floor liners worth the premium, or should I look at something like TuxMat for better coverage against salt? Also, I’ve heard mixed things about whether a specialized trunk liner is necessary if I’m hauling damp gear.

I’m trying to keep my initial accessory budget around $1,500, excluding the tires. Since the iX has such a unique interior design and those large screens, are there any specific cleaning tools or protectors you’d recommend for winter grime? For those of you who have survived a winter with the xDrive50, what are the must-have items that made your life easier during those freezing months?

Ok so, I went through this last year when I first got my xDrive50 and honestly, the safety side of things had me pretty stressed too. One thing I realized is that while the interior is gorgeous, it's basically a giant magnet for road salt once the slush starts. I looked at the BMW liners, but at over $200, it felt like a lot for something that doesn't cover the dead pedal area where all the snow melts off your boot. I ended up going with a more budget-friendly approach by picking up some generic heavy-duty rubber mats for the back and trunk to save cash, but I really focused my spend on visibility.

I found that cheaping out on washer fluid was a mistake—I switched to Prestone AS259 All-Season Windshield Washer Fluid because it actually de-ices at like -27F, which is huge for safety when the sensors get gunked up. For the screens, I just keep a big pack of Amazon Basics Microfiber Cleaning Cloths in the center console. It's way cheaper than those fancy kits and works just as well for wiping away salt fingerprints. Basically, I saved about $100 on the small stuff which helped me feel better about the tire cost! gl!

sooo i just finished my first winter with the iX and honestly, i feel u on the range anxiety!! i'm still kinda figuring things out myself but i definitely have some thoughts on the gear...

1. **Floor Mats**: bmw vs TuxMat Floor Mats for BMW iX. okay so the BMW ones look cool and fit the vibe, but for salt?? no way. the BMW iX All-Weather Floor Mats just dont cover enough of the dead pedal area. TuxMat basically covers every inch of carpet so salt doesnt stand a chance. i'd go with those for sure.

2. **Trunk Protection**: if you're hauling wet gear, definitely get the WeatherTech Cargo Liner for BMW iX. it's got a lip that keeps melted snow from soaking the trunk floor. totally worth the like $130 i think?

3. **Screen Care**: those huge screens get dusty fast!! i've been using Whoosh! Screen Shine Kit with a fresh microfiber. be careful tho, dont use harsh stuff on the dash or screens.

4. **Range Tip**: make sure to use the pre-conditioning feature while plugged in... it saves sooo much battery life in the cold. anyway gl with the new ride! 👍

Seconding the recommendation above! Those TuxMat Floor Mats for BMW iX are seriously the way to go for the iX because they cover so much more of the carpet than the OEM ones. I've had my xDrive50 for a couple of seasons now, and honestly, the salt creep is the real enemy of that interior.

Since you're worried about range and tech, let me give you some technical perspective on winter prep. One thing people lowkey forget is the efficiency hit from cabin heating. I've found that using the radiant heating (the panels in the doors and dash) is way more efficient than just cranking the HVAC. To keep the car's sensors and those big screens happy, I'd suggest skipping the generic wipes and getting a high-quality microfiber like the The Rag Company Gauntlet Microfiber Drying Towel for the exterior sensors and ScreenMom Screen Cleaner Kit for the interior displays. Winter grime is abrasive, so you gotta be careful not to scratch those coatings.

Regarding your $1,500 budget, here's how I'd break it down vs the alternatives:

1. Charging: If you're charging at home in the cold, a high-quality cable like the Lectron NEMA 14-50 Level 2 EV Charger is great to have as a backup if you don't have a hardwired setup. Pre-conditioning while plugged in is literally the #1 way to save range.
2. Protection: Instead of the BMW trunk liner, look at the WeatherTech CargoLiner for BMW iX. It's a bit stiffer but handles wet ski gear way better imo.
3. Visibility: Don't sleep on the wipers. I switched to Bosch FOCUS FS24 Windshield Wiper Blade and they handle the slush much better than the stock ones.

Basically, focus on pre-conditioning and protecting the tech. You'll lose maybe 20-25% range in deep freeze, but the car handles like a tank! 👍

Just found this thread today! @Reply #1 - good point! Reading all this reminds me so much of my first big winter trip in the iX which turned into such a huge saga! 1. We headed out during that massive blizzard last year, totally pumped to see how the car would handle the deep powder on the way to the ski lodge! 2. Everything was going fantastic until my wife realized she forgot the keys to the cabin, so we had to pull over in this tiny, snowed-in town to figure out a plan while the wind was howling outside. 3. We ended up sitting there for hours watching movies on that gorgeous display while the heater kept us toasty, totally oblivious to the fact that the local diner was actually having a karaoke night right across the street! It was seriously one of the most fun nights we ever had just hanging out in the parking lot of a closed gas station... man, those winter nights really hit different in a quiet EV! Such a wild memory!
