Hey everyone! I just took delivery of my new i4 and I’m absolutely loving the drive, but I’m a bit overwhelmed by the charging setup options. While the included BMW Flexible Fast Charger is a nice start, I’m looking for something more permanent and robust for my garage. I'm currently torn between getting the official BMW Wallbox or a popular third-party option like ChargePoint. I also need suggestions for a high-quality Type 2 cable for public charging and perhaps some cable management tools to keep the floor clear. Does anyone have a specific Level 2 home charger they swear by for their i4, and are there any 'must-have' accessories you'd recommend for a new owner?

Just found this thread today! Honestly, I've gotta say that while the Grizzl-E mentioned earlier is basically a tank, I've had a different experience when it comes to balancing features and price for my i4. Respectfully, I'd consider another option if you want the best bang for your buck. I'd actually suggest a different approach—the Emporia Level 2 EV Charger 48 Amp. It's super robust and the energy monitoring in the app is lowkey better than most high-end units I've tried, plus it's way cheaper than the ChargePoint or official BMW options.

For public charging, you really don't need to spend a fortune. I'm very happy with the Lectron 16ft 32A Type 2 to Type 2 EV Charging Cable because it’s durable but doesn't have that "BMW tax" on the price tag. And for keeping the garage floor clear, I swear by the BougeRV EV Charger Cable Organizer... it's just a simple J-hook with a holster but it works sooo well for keeping things tidy. Anyway, just my two cents! gl with the new ride! 👍

Respectfully, I'd consider another option besides the official BMW unit or ChargePoint. NGL, the BMW Wallbox Gen 3 looks cool, but I've had a different experience regarding technical reliability with it. If you want something truly robust, I'd actually suggest a different approach—the Grizzl-E Classic Level 2 EV Charger 40 Amp.

It’s basically a tank with its NEMA 4X aluminum cast housing. I’m a bit cautious about the software glitches on "smart" chargers, so the Grizzl-E is my go-to cuz it just works without needing a buggy app. For that public Type 2 cable, make sure to grab the MENNEKES Type 2 Charging Cable 32A 7kW 5m—it’s the industry standard for a reason. Also, for the garage floor, get the EVoReel Cable Management System to keep things tidy. Seriously, don't overcomplicate the tech side... just get something heavy-duty that can handle the i4’s onboard charging limits without breaking a sweat. anyway, gl with the setup!

Honestly, trying to compare these brands is a nightmare lately because the quality control has gone downhill. My buddy tried to save a few bucks by mixing and matching brands for his garage setup last year and unfortunately it was a total disaster. He thought he was being smart but the hardware was just not as good as expected.

  • the cable didnt even fit the holster
  • the app wouldnt talk to his home network
  • he ended up blowing a fuse twice in one week I remember spending an entire Saturday just staring at his electrical panel while he ranted about how modern tech is just garbage. Kinda reminds me of when my brother in law tried to install a generic unit he found on some random site and it started humming like a beehive... never did get it working tho.

So I spent way too much time doing market research before I landed on a setup for my i4... basically looked at every teardown video and forum post out there. Most people just look at the price, but I was looking at future-proofing and real-world reliability after comparing a dozen different brands. Here is what I found after my deep dive: - Tesla Universal Wall Connector: Tbh, this is the most logical choice right now. Since most of the industry is moving to NACS, this unit is totally future-proof because it has the integrated Magic Dock adapter. It’s super robust and the cable is much more manageable than the chunky BMW one.
- Wallbox Pulsar Plus 48 Amp: If your garage is tight, this is the best compact option. It has great "smart" features that actually stay connected to Wi-Fi - unlike some of the cheaper units - and it supports power sharing if you ever add another EV to the house.
- EVoReel Cable Management: If you really want the floor completely clear, look into a retractable reel system. It’s way better than just a hook on the wall... feels much more premium. The market is changing fast so definitely think about what you might be driving in 5 years too...

yo, congrats on the i4!! seriously, i just got mine a few months ago and i'm still totally obsessed with how it drives. i feel u on the charging struggle tho, it’s lowkey overwhelming at first.

sooo, for my setup, i actually went with the ChargePoint Home Flex and honestly? i have no complaints at all. i was looking at the official bmw wallbox too cuz it looks sleek, but i liked that the chargepoint app lets me track exactly how much i’m spending on electricity. plus, i figure if i ever get a different brand ev down the road, it’s basically universal. the installation was pretty chill, i just had an electrician pop in a 14-50 outlet and it’s been working perfectly ever since.

for the cable management... omg you definitely need something. i actually just got a simple wall-mounted hook and holster combo from amazon for like twenty bucks? it keeps the floor clear so i dont trip over the cord in the dark lol. and definitely grab a 22kW rated Type 2 cable for when youre out and about. i mean, the i4 doesn't even charge that fast on AC, but it’s good to have a high-quality cable just in case the public station doesn't have one attached.

i'm still kinda new to this whole ev thing myself, but honestly, once you get the home charger sorted, it’s so much easier. anyway, hope that helps a bit!! gl with the new ride, you’re gonna love it!
