Ive been scouring the web for a clean F80 M3 for like three weeks straight now and man it is exhausting. I really want a sedan because I have to haul my kids around occasionally but I still want that speed for my commute into Jersey. I keep looking at Bring a Trailer and Cars and Bids but the prices there are just nuts lately with those auction fees and then you have to deal with shipping if the car is in California or something. Plus some of those collector grade cars are almost too nice to actually drive which isnt what I want.

Then I tried the usual sites like Autotrader and honestly half the listings that say low mileage actually have like four previous owners or a weird accident history that the dealer forgot to mention in the description. I have about 65k saved up and I really want to find something with under 20k miles before the weather gets nice. Most of the stuff I see locally in the tri-state area is either beat to hell or has 60k miles on the clock. Are there any specific enthusiast forums or private groups where people actually take care of their cars and sell them for a fair price without the auction madness? Where do you guys usually look when youre hunting for a really specific M3 build that hasnt been abused?...

Bimmerpost is the only place worth checking if you want to dodge those ridiculous auction fees. I found my last M car there and I was super satisfied with the transparency of the private sellers. You save about 5 percent right off the bat compared to BaT. For 65k you can definitely snag a solid BMW M3 F80 LCI Sedan with low miles if you are patient with the classifieds section. A few things I have noticed that keep the price down:

  • Look for cars with the Executive Package but skip the Carbon Ceramics unless you are tracking it daily.
  • Focus on the 2017 to 2018 LCI models for better tech and taillights.
  • Check the service history for the 1200 mile break in service specifically. Most guys on there keep spreadsheets of every oil change and use Liqui Moly Molygen 5W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil so you know they care. Honestly just stay away from the dealers in North Jersey, their markups are insane right now.

Re: "Bimmerpost is the only place..." definitely check BMW CCA too. In my experience, members keep better data on these:

I spent months hunting for my F80 and honestly learned the hard way that low mileage doesnt always mean perfect. Found one with 15k miles last year that had been sitting so long the seals were actually weeping. You might want to consider looking at the private M3 Enthusiast groups on Facebook, but keep your guard up because people there overvalue their builds.

Re: "Bimmerpost is the only place worth checking if..." - ngl bimmerpost is a goldmine but honestly some of my best finds came from just talking to guys at local coffee meets. i found my current setup because the owner was just tired of paying for storage!

  • my first m3 was a nightmare because i focused only on the odometer
  • i learned that rubber parts hate sitting around in a garage during those jersey winters
  • these cars actually love being driven hard every once in a while to keep things moving it reminds me of this one time i drove out to the poconos for a weekend rally. i was so paranoid about putting miles on the car that i almost didnt go. then i met this guy with a high mileage m3 who was absolutely sending it through the corners and having the time of his life! we ended up grabbing some amazing pizza at this tiny hole in the wall place and talking for hours about how these engines thrive when they actually get up to temp. i realized right then that i was worrying way too much about resale value instead of just enjoying the machine. honestly i barely even looked at my dash for the rest of the trip back and just loved every second of the drive. anyway... but yeah keep an eye out for how the owner actually treated it!
