Ive been stressing out about this for like three weeks now and my wife legit thinks Im crazy for spending this much on a car but I really want that S63 engine and the CPO warranty is a non-negotiable for me since I dont want to get stuck with a massive repair bill in a year. Im in North Jersey and looking to pull the trigger by the end of the month before my current trade-in value drops any further. Right now Im torn between two specific listings I found online.

  • Option one: 2022 Marina Bay Blue X5 M Competition at a dealer about 40 miles away. It has 27,000 miles and they want $104k for it. It looks totally mint and has the Bowers & Wilkins sound system which I really want.
  • Option two: 2021 in Donington Grey with only 14,000 miles for $98k but its a bit further out in PA.

Both are CPO but the 2022 feels more modern for some reason. I'm worried the 2022 has too many miles for that price but then the 2021 is older even with lower miles and I dont know if the suspension is more harsh on the older ones. Is the extra $6k worth it for the 2022 just for the color and the sound system or should I play it safe with the lower mileage 2021? I keep going back and forth and I'm scared I'm gonna miss out on both if I don't decide like tomorrow...

Man, you are definitely not crazy! I've been driving M cars for a decade and the BMW X5 M Competition S63 V8 is basically a supercar in a tuxedo. Honestly, if you're already spending $100k, that $6k difference is nothing compared to the regret of not getting exactly what you want. Heres why I would 100% go with the 2022 Marina Bay Blue:

  • The Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System is absolutely legendary. I have it in mine and those light-up speakers alone make the cabin feel so much more premium at night. Its a total night and day difference from the standard audio setup.
  • Marina Bay Blue is one of the best colors BMW has ever made. Donington Grey is classy, but it blends in way too much. If you're getting an X5M, you want people to know!
  • Regarding the suspension, BMW actually refined the damping software a bit for the 2022 model year. It still feels like a tank, but its slightly less jarring on those crappy Jersey roads than the early 2021 builds.
  • 27,000 miles is still super low for a CPO car. Since you have that warranty, dont even sweat it. Go get the blue one before someone else snags it! You only live once and that S63 engine is gonna make you smile every single time you hit the starter button. Its honestly the best daily driver on the planet.

Coming back to this... spent months hunting for my last M and ended up going with the older model year because the math just made more sense. Being able to pocket the difference feels great, and I've been super satisfied with the decision ever since. It left me with extra cash for things that actually matter day-to-day. Plus, the wife was way more on board once she saw the $5k+ savings from skipping the flashier paint color. That 2021 with 14k miles sounds like a total gem. Lower mileage usually means less wear on the seat bolsters and fewer rock chips on the front end. I used my leftover budget for a few things to make the car feel brand new:

  • A set of WeatherTech FloorLiner DigitalFit for our messy North Jersey winters.
  • A professional detail with Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra ceramic coating to keep it looking mint.
  • The Vantrue N4 3-Channel Dash Cam for some peace of mind when driving on the turnpike. Suspension didn't really change between those specific years anyway. I've had zero complaints with my 'older' CPO and the drive is still incredible. If you can haggle that PA dealer down a bit more because you are traveling from out of state, you will be in a really good spot.
