Hey everyone,

So, I'm finally getting around to installing a dash cam in my Ford F150 (it's a 2018 model, if that matters). I've been meaning to do this for ages, especially after a near-miss I had last month where someone pulled out in front of me. Luckily, no damage, but it really made me realize how important it is to have video evidence in case something *does* happen.

I've been doing some initial research, but honestly, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the options out there. It seems like there are a million different dash cams, all with different features and price points. Since this is going in my F150, I'm particularly interested in a dash cam that's relatively easy to install, given the size of the windshield and the potential for needing extra wiring to reach the power source. I'm not looking for something super fancy, but I *do* want good video quality, especially at night, and reliable parking mode is a big plus since it spends a fair bit of time in parking lots.

Ideally, I'd like something that's relatively discreet and doesn't obstruct my view too much. I've seen some that are huge and bulky, and that's definitely not what I'm going for. Also, a rear camera would be nice but isn't absolutely essential if it significantly increases the price. My budget is flexible, but I'm hoping to stay under $300 if possible.

So, for those of you who have dash cams in your F150s, which ones would you recommend? What has your experience been like with installation, video quality, and overall reliability? Any tips or things to watch out for when choosing a dash cam for my specific truck? Thanks in advance for your help!

Actually, I kind of disagree with the idea that getting power for parking mode has to be a huge pain or require a separate battery pack. I was pretty intimidated by the technical side of it since I am still a beginner with truck mods, but I found a much easier DIY way for our F150s. If your 2018 has the powered rearview mirror, you can just use a simple adapter to tap power right there. It saves you from running long wires to the fuse box and pulling up trim... at least that worked for me and it looks way cleaner. I spent a lot of time looking at sensor specs and night vision data, and these two seem like the best fit for your budget:

  • VIOFO A119 V3: This one uses a Sony Starvis sensor which is basically the gold standard for seeing things in the dark. It is small enough to stay hidden behind the mirror too.
  • Garmin Dash Cam Mini 2: If you really want discreet, this is basically the size of a car key. It doesnt even have a screen so you wont even notice it is there. Does your truck have the auto-dimming mirror? Tbh, using that for power made the whole install feel like a five minute job instead of a weekend project. I think the VIOFO offers the best video quality for the price right now if you can find a good deal.

Hey there!

I totally get the dash cam overwhelm. I've been there! I've actually tried a few different ones in my F150 (it's a 2020), and honestly, I've had mixed results.

I started with a Rexing V1. The video quality during the day was decent, but the night vision wasn't as good as I'd hoped. Installation was pretty straightforward though, just plugged into the 12V outlet. Parking mode was okay, but it drained my battery faster than I liked. I'd say it's a decent budget option, but... I wanted better.

Then I upgraded to a Thinkware F200 Pro. It's a bit pricier, but the video quality is significantly better, especially at night. It also has a better parking mode system that's less likely to kill your battery. The only downside is that you might need to hardwire it for parking mode, which can be a pain. I'd say it's a good option if you're willing to spend a little more.

My advice? Go for the Thinkware if it fits your budget. Good luck!

Hey! I've been messing with dash cams for years, so I get the analysis paralysis. A couple of things you might want to consider that haven't been mentioned yet:

First, be careful about "parking mode." On a 2018 F150, unless you're hardwiring it (which can be a pain), you're relying on the truck's 12V outlet. Many turn off after a set time, rendering parking mode useless. Make sure to test yours! Some cams have a low-voltage cutoff to protect the battery, which is nice. I would suggest looking into a dedicated battery pack for parking mode if you're serious about it.

Second, instead of focusing solely on night video quality specs, look at sensor size and lens aperture. A larger sensor (like a Sony STARVIS) and a wider aperture (f/1.8 or lower) will gather more light, which is what *really* improves night vision. Some cheaper cams pump up the brightness digitally, which just makes everything grainy. Also, think about the operating temperature range, especially if you live in a hot climate. I fried one last summer because it wasn't rated high enough! Hope this helps.

Hey! I hear you on the budget thing. Honestly, I went a bit cheaper than $300 and I'm still pretty happy. I grabbed a Vantrue N2 Pro (it's usually around $200ish). It's a dual cam (front and inside), which I actually like, even though you wanted rear. The video quality is decent enough, and it works well for parking mode. No complaints so far after a year! Might be worth checking out to save some cash. Good luck!

Hey! I'd also consider how the dashcam impacts your truck's safety systems. Some can interfere with lane departure warnings or even airbags (yikes!). Do some research to make sure whatever you pick is compatible with your F150's safety features. A reputable brand might be a safer bet, even if it costs a bit more. Just a thought! Good luck!
