Hey everyone, looking for the best coolant for my Ford F150. I've got a 2017 with the 3.5L EcoBoost. I'm seeing some conflicting info online about what's actually compatible and want to avoid any issues. Should I stick with the Motorcraft stuff, or are there better aftermarket options that offer superior protection, especially for a turbo engine? What are you guys using in your F150s, and have you had any problems? Thanks!

I totally agree with Michael about the price tag on the dealership bottles. When I did a flush on my 3.5 a while back, I couldnt find the orange stuff anywhere local, so I ended up switching to the newer yellow spec that Ford moved to recently. I was kinda nervous at first because the colors didnt match up, but its been totally fine in my current setup. What I really learned from that DIY job is that buying the concentrate is way more cost-effective than the pre-diluted stuff. You basically get twice as much for a few bucks more. Just make sure you use distilled water tho... I used tap water in an old car once and the mineral buildup eventually trashed my radiator. Keeping it pure makes a huge difference for the long haul. My truck has been running the new stuff for about 20k miles now and everything looks perfect even when I am towing in the heat.

Hey there!

I totally get your concern about the coolant for your 2017 EcoBoost. I've been wrenching on Fords for years, and coolant choices are super important, especially with turbo engines that run hotter. I've seen some aftermarket coolants cause more problems than they solve over time – trust me, replacing a clogged heater core is NOT fun.

For your 2017 3.5L EcoBoost, I'd honestly stick with the Motorcraft Orange coolant (WSS-M97B44-D). It's specifically formulated for your engine and cooling system materials. Yeah, some aftermarket options *claim* better performance, but unless you're doing some serious towing or track days, the Motorcraft stuff is gonna be your best bet for long-term reliability.

I had a bad experience with a universal coolant in my old Explorer years ago, and it caused corrosion, and I had to flush the whole system twice! Learned my lesson. So, I'd suggest sticking with what Ford recommends. It's designed for your truck, and you'll avoid potential compatibility issues. Hope this helps!

Hey! Coolant's definitely something to get right. While aftermarket coolants *can* work, I've seen issues with compatibility, especially with Ford's aluminum blocks. Honestly, sticking with Motorcraft's orange coolant (WSS-M97B44-D) is the safest bet in my experience. It's specifically formulated for your engine's materials. Over the years, I've tried many alternatives, but I always come back to Motorcraft to avoid corrosion problems. It's a bit more expensive, but peace of mind is worth it, right? Good luck!

Hey! I think everyone's made some good points already. I agree that coolant is something you really want to get right! I'm kinda new to this too, but from what I've been reading, it's not just about performance, but also about safety in the long run, right?

So, sticking with Motorcraft orange coolant might be the safest bet, even if it's a bit pricier. Why? Because you KNOW it's designed for your engine. Avoiding corrosion and weird chemical reactions seems super important, especially with the aluminum parts and turbo in the EcoBoost. Replacing a head gasket or turbo because of coolant issues sounds like a NIGHTMARE and EXPENSIVE!

That said, if you're really set on an aftermarket option, maybe look into brands that specifically state they meet or exceed Ford's WSS-M97B44-D spec. Double-check the specs and read reviews carefully. Make sure people with similar F150s have had good experiences. Also, maybe check what the warranty says - does using a non-Motorcraft coolant void anything? It's worth looking into!

Honestly, for me, the peace of mind of using the Motorcraft stuff is worth the extra few bucks. It's like, a few dollars now could save you thousands later, right? Plus, you can usually find it online for a decent price if you shop around. I believe it's better to spend a bit more on something you know it works, than save money now and potentially create a bigger problem later.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have other questions.

Hey! Everyone's made good points, especially about sticking with Motorcraft for compatibility. But, let's talk brands! I've honestly been happy with Zerex. They've got a G-05 formula that's 'supposed' to be compatible and I've had no complaints. I think Peak also makes a similar coolant, but I haven't personally used it. Just make sure whatever you choose meets or exceeds Ford's WSS-M97B44-D spec. IMO, do your research on the *actual* formulation, not just the marketing! Good luck!

Hey! While Motorcraft is usually safe, it can be pricey. I've unfortunately had issues with some aftermarket coolants claiming to be compatible but weren't as good as expected. Maybe check online for reviews comparing price vs. performance before deciding?
