I just picked up my new Electrified G80 yesterday here in LA but I honestly have no idea how the charging stuff works at home or on the go and its kinda stressing me out before my San Diego trip next weekend. sorry if this is a dumb question but what stuff do I actually need to buy so I dont get stuck somewhere without power?

Regarding what #2 said about "Building on the earlier suggestion, I would actually..."

  • I totally agree on being cautious with the electrical side of things. The G80 is a tech beast with its 800V architecture, so you really want gear that can handle the heat. For your SD trip, I would suggest picking up a Mustart Level 2 Portable EV Charger 40 Amp NEMA 14-50 for the trunk. Its a solid backup if public chargers are down. You also definitely need the Genesis Motors Vehicle to Load V2L Connector to use the cars best feature. It lets you plug in normal appliances. Just make sure you arent using flimsy indoor extension cords with it... you need something heavy-duty like an Iron Forge Cable 50 Ft 12/3 Outdoor Extension Cord. Cheap thin wires will overheat fast under a continuous load. Better to over-spec your gear than risk a short... nobody wants a melted outlet on vacation.

Congrats on the G80! For home, you might want to consider the Grizzl-E Classic Level 2 EV Charger 14-50 Plug 40A since its basically bulletproof and way cheaper than fancy smart chargers. Make sure to check for utility rebates tho. I would suggest getting a Lectron Tesla to J1772 Adapter 48A Max for the SD trip just in case you find a Tesla destination charger.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I would actually be a bit more cautious about going with a completely non-smart charger for a car as sophisticated as the Genesis. While the Grizzl-E is definitely built like a tank, the Genesis app integration can sometimes be a bit hit or miss for some owners when it comes to scheduling. Honestly, having a smart unit like the ChargePoint Home Flex Level 2 EV Charger or even the Wallbox Pulsar Plus 40A gives you way better control over scheduling and energy monitoring directly from your phone. But more importantly, I really need to mention a safety concern that most new owners overlook. If you decide to go with a plug-in unit using a NEMA 14-50 outlet, please make sure your electrician doesnt use a cheap, residential-grade socket. Those $10 parts from hardware stores arent built for the heat of a continuous 40-amp load for eight hours straight. I would suggest insisting on an industrial-grade outlet like the Hubbell HBL9450A 50 Amp Receptacle to avoid any melting or fire hazards. It is way more expensive but honestly worth the peace of mind. Regarding the Tesla adapter, keep in mind that the G80 can pull a lot of power. Some of the cheaper adapters can get pretty warm during long charging sessions. I usually suggest the Tesla Tap Mini 60 Amp because the build quality is significantly higher than the budget brands. Just be careful out there on your San Diego run... the public charging infrastructure in SoCal is better than most places, but it still requires some planning tho.
