Hey everyone! I recently picked up a Genesis G70, and with winter just around the corner, I’m getting a bit nervous about how it’s going to handle the snow and ice. I’m currently running the stock Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, which are amazing in the dry, but I know they won’t cut it once the temperatures drop below freezing.
I live in an area where we get a decent mix of slushy suburban roads and some heavy deep-snow days, so I’m looking for a solid dedicated winter setup. I’ve been looking at the Bridgestone Blizzak WS90s and the Michelin X-Ice Snow, but I’m curious if anyone has experience with how these affect the G70’s specific handling dynamics. I really don’t want to lose too much of that sporty steering feel, but safety is obviously my main priority.
Does anyone here have a go-to winter tire recommendation for the G70? Also, are most of you downsizing to 18-inch wheels for the winter, or are you sticking with the 19-inch staggered setup? I’d love to hear what’s working best for your cars before I pull the trigger on a set!
Honestly, I totally get the anxiety! I've been there with my G70 and unfortunately, the stock Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires are basically hockey pucks once it hits 40 degrees. I tried to stretch them one season and it was a disaster—zero grip and super sketchy braking.
Since you're looking for a budget-friendly way to keep that sporty feel without breaking the bank, I really recommend downsizing to an 18-inch square setup. I picked up a set of Bridgestone Blizzak WS90 225/45R18 tires and, while they're amazing in deep snow, I was actually a bit disappointed with how much "squish" they added to the steering. They're great for safety, but you definitely lose that sharp Genesis turn-in.
If you want to save some serious cash, check out the Vredestein Wintrac Pro. They usually run about $150-$180 per tire, which is way cheaper than the Michelins, and they handle much more like a performance tire on dry pavement. Seriously, skip the 19-inch staggered setup; it’s too expensive to replace and narrower 18s cut through slush way better. Look for rebates on Tire Rack or Discount Tire right now—you can usually snag a $70-100 gift card this time of year!
Seconding the recommendation above regarding the performance winter tires! I've been driving my G70 for three years now, and honestly, I learned the hard way that the wrong setup can really kill the fun. When I first started out, I was super worried about the cost of a second set of rims. I eventually decided to downsize to 18-inch wheels, and it was a total lifesaver for my wallet.
If you're looking to save some cash without sacrificing too much safety, I would suggest checking out the Continental WinterContact TS 860 S. They're usually a bit more budget-friendly than the Michelins but still handle the slush really well. Also, definitely look into a square setup on some RTX Envy Matte Black 18-inch wheels instead of sticking with the staggered 19s. It makes rotating tires way easier and cheaper in the long run! Just be careful with the clearance if you have the Brembo brakes. Hope this helps!
Hi there! I actually had a similar situation last year when I first got my G70 and was terrified of the first big storm. Not to disagree with the previous advice, but I'd actually suggest a different approach if you're worried about losing that 'sporty' feel. While the popular choices are great for deep snow, they can feel a bit squishy on dry pavement.
I've been looking into the technical specs, and I think a Performance Winter tire like the Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3 might be a better fit for you. These are designed to maintain high-speed stability and steering response while still handling slush and ice way better than any all-season. Also, I definitely recommend downsizing to an 18-inch square setup using something like Enkei Performance PX-10 18x8 wheels. Going to a narrower 225/45R18 size helps cut through the slush much better than the wide 19-inch staggered setup. It's a bit of a learning curve for me too, but I've found that extra sidewall really helps with winter potholes! Hope this helps!
To add to the point above: I'm honestly still so frustrated with how my G70 handled last season. I went out and bought what I thought was the safest, most reliable setup available because I am a total nervous wreck in the snow, but unfortunately, it just did not live up to the hype. I spent a literal fortune at the shop and still ended up fishtailing near a curb during a light dusting... it was so disheartening. I remember sitting there in the middle of the road just feeling so defeated because I had done all the research and bought the premium gear, yet the car still felt like it was on skates. It is just disappointing when you prioritize safety above everything else and the equipment still lets you down. Tbh, I have started to dread winter entirely because no matter what I put on the car, it never feels quite right. It makes you wonder if we are all just chasing a sense of security that isnt really there with this platform... anyway, just wanted to vent because I know exactly how that anxiety feels.
