Hey everyone! I just took delivery of my Hummer EV SUV and I'm itching to get it out on some trails. I'm planning a trip to Moab soon, but I'm a bit nervous about the weight since this thing is such a beast.
I need recommendations on must-have off-roading accessories specifically for this model. Since it weighs around 9,000 pounds, I'm worried my old gear won't cut it. I'm especially looking for:
Has anyone found specific brands that work well with the Hummer's unique size? What are the absolute essentials I should grab before my first trip?
Congrats on the beast! Honestly, I've been wheeling heavy rigs for a while and that weight changes everything. Most standard recovery gear is just gonna fail you. You definitely need a rope with a huge breaking strength. I personally use the Bubba Rope Extreme Bubba 1-1/4 inch x 30 feet Recovery Rope since it is rated for 52,300 lbs. It is a total lifesaver when pulling a 9,000 lb truck out of deep sand or mud. For the tires, dont even bother with a small pump. Airing up those massive tires takes ages with a cheap unit. I highly recommend the ARB Maximum Performance Twin On-Board Air Compressor CKMTA12 in the portable kit. It is super fast and wont overheat halfway through the job. Enjoy Moab, it is basically the best playground for that truck!
Coming back to this after looking over some specs from my last Moab run. Tbh, the biggest thing people overlook with a 9,000 lb rig is the thermal load on your compressor. I learned the hard way that a standard pump will hit its thermal cutoff halfway through the second tire because of the sheer volume and pressure needed for those Hummer tires. You really need to look at the CFM (cubic feet per minute) ratings. I ended up going with the Smittybilt 2781 High Performance 5.65 CFM Air Compressor because it handles the high-volume tires way better than the smaller units. For protection, definitely look for frame-mounted options. The Rocky Road Outfitter GMC Hummer EV Rock Sliders are basically a requirement if you're doing any actual crawling. Cheap steps will just fold like paper under that much weight... its a huge upfront cost, but way cheaper than a body shop visit. Just make sure the mounting hardware is grade 8 or better.
Helpful thread 👍
Just saw this thread! I remember my first time taking a heavy EV off-road, totally different ballgame. I learned the hard way that cheap gear snaps like a twig under 9k lbs. I upgraded to the Yankum Ropes Big Bertha 1.5 inch x 30 feet for peace of mind. For air, the VIAIR 450P-Automatic Portable Compressor is a solid alternative to a fixed mount. It works great for those high-volume tires.
