Hey everyone! I finally took delivery of my GMC Hummer EV SUV in Void Black, and honestly, it’s even more of a beast in person than I expected. However, after a week of daily driving, I’m realizing that the climb into the cabin is a bit of a stretch for my kids (and even for me if I’m being honest). I really need to add some running boards, but I’m torn on which style actually complements the aggressive look of the Hummer without ruining the ground clearance or the overall aesthetic.
I’ve been looking at a few different directions. On one hand, the OEM rock sliders with the integrated assist steps look rugged and fit the 'off-road king' vibe perfectly, but I wonder if they provide enough of a step surface for smaller feet. On the other hand, I’ve seen some aftermarket power-retractable boards that tuck away completely when the doors are closed. My main concern there is durability—especially with the weight of this vehicle and the potential for mud or snow buildup in the mechanism during winter.
I’m also curious about the finish. Should I go with a textured matte black to match the trim, or is anyone running something with a bit more of a machined look? I want something that looks like it belongs on a $100k+ vehicle, not a cheap bolt-on afterthought. I’m also trying to keep the installation relatively straightforward without having to do any major modifications to the underbody panels.
For those of you who have already added steps or boards to your SUV, which ones did you go with and how do they look against the body lines? If you have photos or specific brand recommendations like Go Rhino, Amp Research, or the GM accessories line, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
What running boards do you think offer the best balance between rugged styling and actual day-to-day functionality for the Hummer EV SUV?
Honestly, I'd suggest being super careful with power boards on a beast this heavy. I went with the GMC Hummer EV Integrated Off-Road Assist Steps because I wanted to keep that factory warranty and rugged look. They're basically rock sliders, so you don't lose clearance, but they definitely have a narrower step surface... might be tricky for ur kids tbh. If u want easier access, maybe look at AMP Research PowerStep XL? Just watch out for ice buildup in the motors during winter!!
yo! congrats on the new beast!! i totally get it... my kids basically needed a mountain climbing harness to get into mine at first lol.
Check out some of the dedicated EV forums like HummerChat or the GMC accessories portal for deals. Honestly, I had a kinda *rough* experience trying to save money with those cheap TAC boards too (basically felt like tinfoil). If you want that high-end look without the $2k dealer price tag, maybe? check out Go Rhino Dominator D6 Running Boards. They have that textured matte black finish you wanted and theyre super sturdy for like $600-$700.
I mean, i think they look way better than the generic ones but are half the price of the power boards. Plus, they protect the rockers! gl with the search... its a struggle to find the perfect balance tbh!
i ended up going with the AMP Research PowerStep Xtreme for my suv. the dual motor setup is way better for the mud and snow we get around here than the standard ones. i was comparing them to the RealTruck Go Rhino RB20 Running Boards which look great but i really wanted that clean look when the doors are closed. my wife is super happy with them because the step drops lower than the factory ones. honestly reminds me of this time we took the old k5 blazer up to the cabin back in 2012. we didnt have steps then, just grabbed onto the roll bar. my buddy dave actually slipped and landed right in a patch of wild berries. took weeks to get the stains out of his jeans, plus the bear encounter later that night was a whole other story... we ended up staying in the truck for like six hours until it left. anyway, the amp boards are worth the cash if you want that premium feel. but yeah.
Been using this for years, no complaints
Sooo I actually tried going the cheap route since the dealer wanted a fortune. I picked up some TAC Side Steps Running Boards for Hummer EV for like $350 online.
1. Installation was basically a nightmare cuz the bolt holes barely lined up.
2. The brackets felt reallyyy flimsy for such a heavy truck... kinda scary tbh.
3. Unfortunately, the finish is already peeling.
I wanted to save money, but it just feels like a cheap afterthought on a 100k beast. gl!
