Best roof rack options for the latest GMC Acadia?

Hey everyone! I recently upgraded to the latest GMC Acadia, and I’m absolutely loving the ride so far. However, I’ve run into a bit of a snag when it comes to cargo space for our family road trips. With the third row up, the trunk space is a little tight for all our camping gear and the kids' sports equipment, so I’m officially in the market for a solid roof rack system.

I’ve been doing some digging, but I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by the options. I’ve noticed that the flush side rails on the new model seem a bit different than the older generations, and I want to make sure I get something that fits perfectly without scratching the finish or creating a ton of wind noise. I’m torn between going with the official GMC crossbars from the dealership or looking into aftermarket brands like Thule or Yakima.

My main priorities are durability and ease of installation—I’m not the handiest person, so something that doesn't require a degree in engineering to mount would be a huge plus! Also, we occasionally carry a heavy cargo box and a couple of kayaks, so weight capacity is definitely a concern. I’m hoping to keep the budget around $400-$600 if possible, but I’m willing to invest a bit more for quality that lasts.

Has anyone here installed a rack on their new Acadia yet? I’d love to hear about your experiences with wind whistle at highway speeds and whether you noticed a big hit to your MPG.

For those who have already pulled the trigger, which specific brand and model of crossbars would you recommend for the latest Acadia to get the best balance of price and performance?

Honestly, I was in your shoes last year with my new Acadia and I highkey regret going with the dealership bars. They look okay but the wind noise at 70mph is literally unbearable... sooo loud. I finally switched to the Thule WingBar Evo 135 Load Bars with the Thule Raised Evo Feet and it's basically silent now. Seriously, the quality difference is HUGE. It handles my cargo box and two kayaks without flexing at all, right? Installation is kinda easy too, took me like 20 mins. You'll probably spend around $650 but it's worth it cuz the cheap ones just whistle lol.

Quick question - before I give full advice, can you clarify if you're planning to mount the cargo box and the kayaks at the same time? Also, does your Acadia have the mounting holes on the inside of those flush rails??

Basically, the technical side of this comes down to dynamic vs. static weight limits. Most mid-size SUVs like ours are rated for about 165 lbs while driving. If you're looking for budget-friendly options that won't break the bank like the big brands, here's what I've seen working:

* Malone AirFlow2 Universal Cross Rail System 50 inch - These are usually around $160-$200 and honestly, they're super easy to install because they use a simple integrated tool.
* Rhino-Rack Vortex StealthBar Black 2 Bar Roof Rack - These are a bit more low-profile, which highkey helps with that wind whistle you're worried about. They usually land in the $400 range.

Since you mentioned not being the handiest person, I'd stay away from the super cheap universal kits on Amazon... they're basically a nightmare to align right. It depends on your needs, but those mid-tier brands usually give the best bang for your buck without the "dealership tax." Let me know about the total weight you're hauling and I can check the specs! gl!

Ok so I have been hanging around this forum for years now but I am still a total newbie when it comes to actually hauling heavy stuff on the roof. I spent like three weeks just reading through market comparisons because I was so paranoid about getting the wrong fit for those flush rails. Honestly it feels like a giant rabbit hole once you start looking at the technical specs. From what I gathered during my research journey:

  • The premium brands really focus on the T-slot compatibility for accessories
  • Some brands like Rhino-Rack Vortex StealthBar focus more on a low profile look
  • Others like the Inno Aero Base Stay system are known for being easier for people who arent handy I was really torn because I want it to look sleek but I also dont want it to whistle like a tea kettle at 80mph. I noticed that some of the market analysis says the gap between the roof and the bar is what causes most of the noise - not just the shape of the bar itself. I ended up leaning towards a more integrated look. Does anyone know if the weight capacity is actually lower for the low profile bars? I am still trying to wrap my head around the dynamic versus static load stuff before I bolt anything down.

I went through this last year. honestly, i spent weeks researching because i didn't want my Acadia looking like a science project lol. after seeing how much the OEM ones hummed on the highway, i grabbed the Yakima JetStream Crossbars 60 inch Black with the Yakima TimberLine Towers. honestly, they're super quiet... i barely notice a drop in MPG, maybe like 1-2 max? install was basically plug and play, didn't even need my tools. definitely worth the $550 i paid.
