I’m finally taking my Hummer EV out to some rocky trails next month! Since this thing is such a heavy beast, I’m curious what recovery gear or protection you guys recommend. Are there specific rock sliders or winches that work best for the EV’s frame? What are your top 3 must-have accessories for serious off-roading?
Just catching up on this thread and seriously, +1 to what was said earlier. That GVWR is highkey a different league compared to a Jeep or Bronco. Over the years, I've seen standard gear literally *snap* under that kind of weight, so you gotta be super picky. Since the previous reply covered the winch and sliders, here’s my technical take on 3 must-haves for a beast this heavy: 1. **Heavy-Duty Shackles**: Don't trust generic ones. I’d grab the Factor 55 Crosby 7/8" Screw Pin Shackle. They’ve got a much higher working load limit (WLL) which is crucial when you’re tugging 9,000+ lbs.
2. **Reinforced Recovery Boards**: Standard plastic boards will probably just pancake. I'd recommend Maxtrax XTREME Recovery Boards because they have replaceable anodized alloy teeth that won't melt under wheel spin.
3. **Fast Deflator**: You'll wanna air down those massive tires for a better footprint. The ARB E-Z Deflator Digital Gauge is my go-to for getting precise low pressure quickly. tbh, idk about you but I'm always paranoid about recovery points with this much mass, so just take it slow on the rocks. gl! 👍
Ok so I totally agree with the above! Safety is highkey the most important thing when you're wheeling a truck this heavy. I'm still kinda a beginner with my Hummer, but I've been really happy with some budget-friendly gear that actually meets the technical specs we need without the luxury price tag. Basically, you want industrial-grade strength so nothing snaps - especially with that 9,000lb weight. My top 3 for staying safe on a budget:
- Vevor 1-1/4 inch Kinetic Recovery Rope 30,000 lbs - Honestly, its way cheaper than boutique brands but the break strength is legit for our weight.
- GearAmerica 5/8 inch Mega Shackles 68,000 lbs MBS - These are super beefy and I'm satisfied they wont fail under pressure.
- Staun II Tire Deflators - Airing down is key for traction and these make it automatic so you dont damage the tires. Anyway, just watch those load ratings and youll be fine. gl!
Good to know!
dude, that thing is a TANK so you gotta respect the GVWR. basically, standard recovery gear will snap like a twig under 9,000 lbs. I'd lowkey recommend the GMC Hummer EV Integrated Off-Road Recovery Winch by ComeUp and definitely the GMC Accessories Rock Slider with Integrated Assist Step. also, grab a Bubba Power Stretch Recovery Rope 7/8 inch x 20 feet... it's literally a lifesaver for heavy EVs. gl!!
