Hey everyone! I just recently took delivery of a brand new GMC Canyon AT4X, and man, this truck is an absolute beast right off the lot. I’m coming from an older half-ton, and the agility of this mid-size platform is already blowing me away. I’ve taken it out on some light trails near my place, and while the factory Multimatic DSSV dampers are incredible, I’m already starting to think about how to push this rig a bit further for more technical overland trips.
I’m planning a trip out to Moab later this year and want to make sure I’m fully prepared for some of the rockier sections. Since the AT4X already comes with a factory lift and 33-inch tires, I’m torn on what the 'essential' next steps are. I’m trying to decide if it’s worth jumping up to 35s immediately, or if I should focus more on underbody protection. Even though it has the factory skid plates, I’m a bit nervous about the rocker panels—has anyone found a set of high-clearance sliders that work perfectly with the existing frame mounts without losing too much ground clearance?
I’m also curious about lighting setups. The stock LEDs are decent, but for those late-night arrivals at camp, I definitely need more ditch light or a hidden bumper bar. I’ve got a budget of around $2,500 to $3,000 for this first round of mods, so I want to be strategic about what adds the most value for rocky, technical terrain versus just aesthetic upgrades.
For those of you who have been wheeling the new Gen 3 Canyons, what are your must-have mods to really unlock the potential of the AT4X? Are there any specific hidden winches or bed rack systems that you’ve found play nice with the truck's sensors and cameras?
yo, congrats on the new truck! honestly, i was in the same boat as you and i lowkey regret some of my first purchases. i tried jumping straight into high-end lighting and it was way more expensive than it needed to be. for a Moab trip on a $3k budget, you really gotta be strategic cuz shipping alone for big parts will kill your wallet...

Basically, dont do the 35s yet. i had issues with rubbing on my gen 3 and it was such a headache to trim everything. plus, 35s will eat your whole budget. honestly, the best value for rocker protection without spending $1500 is the RC GMC Canyon Rock Sliders. they're around $400-$500 and way cheaper than the boutique brands while still being solid enough for rocky trails.
For lighting, skip the crazy expensive kits for now. I went with the Rough Light 2-Inch Cree LED Fog Lights as ditch lights—theyre like $60 and honestly do 90% of what the big brands do. if you want that hidden look, check out the Rough Country 30-inch Black Series Hidden Bumper LED Kit. it fits the canyon grill area perfectly for like $150.
Since youre worried about technical stuff, I'd also grab the AEV GM Mid-Size Differential Cover for the rear. I hit mine on a rock last month and it was a mess... wish i had spent the $200 earlier. stay safe out there man, Moab is gonna be a blast!! 👍
Honestly, I'd hold off on 35s for now. I tried pushing my Gen 3 too fast and ended up with some nasty rubbing issues that just weren't worth the headache. For Moab, you REALLY gotta prioritize protection first.
I'd suggest:
- CBI Offroad GMC Canyon Rock Sliders for that rocker protection you're worried about.
- Baja Designs Squadron Pro LED Ditch Light Kit to help with those late arrivals.
Everything is so expensive and unfortunately, the sensors are super finicky if you mess with the height too much. Focus on the armor first so you don't regret it later!! gl

Sooo, I went through this last year when I first started technical wheeling in my mid-size rig. Honestly, I thought I needed 35s immediately to even stand a chance at Moab, but basically, I learned that the technical capability of these trucks is way higher than we think! Why it matters is because jumping to 35s changes the entire geometry and stress on your CVs—I mean, I've seen guys snap stuff on day one because they prioritized height over protection.
I think... someone told me that the factory rock sliders on the AT4X are okay, but IIRC, they might not be true frame-mounted sliders meant for a full pivot. When I did my first rocky trail, I actually scraped my rocker panel because I didn't have high-clearance protection yet. Honestly, it was a huge wake-up call! Idk if the current aftermarket sliders for the Gen 3 are 100% bolt-on yet, but definitely focus there before tires. It's way cheaper than body work haha! 👍
