I just picked up a new Sierra 3500 HD and plan on hauling a heavy 5th-wheel trailer this summer. I want to make sure I’m fully equipped for safety and convenience. Should I go with a weight-distribution hitch or focus on specific mirror extensions and tire pressure monitoring systems? What specific brands or gear are essential for this truck's towing capacity?

Seconding the recommendation above. Honestly, that B&W hitch is the gold standard, but if you're looking for an alternative because you want more bed space when you're not towing, I've had issues with the weight of some systems. I've been using the Andersen Hitches 3220 Ultimate 5th Wheel Connection for a few years now because it only weighs like 35 lbs. Plus, it's super easy to install alone, which is a lifesaver for my back lol.

Also, since you're hauling a heavy 5th wheel, you gotta consider the pin weight on that 3500 HD. Even with that capacity, the back end can sag more than expected. Idk, but I'd highkey suggest looking into some air springs. I put the Air Lift 5000 Ultimate Air Spring Kit 57338 on my Sierra and it made a HUGE difference in stability. It basically levels everything out so your headlights aren't blinding people at night. gl!

Ok so, I've been hauling trailers with my Sierra for years and honestly, you don't always need the most expensive gear to stay safe. If you're looking to save some cash, I highkey recommend skipping the pricey brand-name mirror extensions. I found the Fit System 80930 Snap-and-Zap Custom Towing Mirror set for around $50-$60, and they work sooo much better than those cheap universal ones that vibrate everywhere.

For the TPMS, if your 3500 HD didn't come with the internal sensors for the trailer, you can grab the TireMinder Solar Powered Trailer TPMS for about $150. It's way cheaper than the factory upgrades and has saved me from a blowout twice now! Basically, I've learned that you dont always gotta buy the top-shelf stuff to get the job done right. Just focus on the essentials first... it's reallyyy easy to overspend when you're excited about a new rig haha. good luck!!

Seconding the recommendation above for sure! Ngl, that previous post about saving cash on mirrors is spot on—you dont always gotta drop a fortune to stay safe. In my experience over the last 10 years of towing with a Sierra, I've learned that safety-first doesnt always mean most expensive, but you definitely cant cut corners on the heavy stuff.

Since youre looking for budget-friendly but SAFE essentials, I highkey recommend checking out the CURT 52062 Better-Weigh Mobile Towing Scale. It's usually under $100 and plugs into your OBDII port to show your real-time tongue weight and payload on your phone. Super helpful so you dont overload that 3500 HD!

Also, if you want a solid backup for those mirrors, the Grandview G2 Universal Clip-On Towing Mirror is a great budget alternative for about $30-40. Honestly, keeping your rig level is the biggest safety win, so maybe look into the Rough Country Rear Air Spring Kit for GMC Sierra 3500 HD if you find the rear sagging. It’s way cheaper than some high-end kits but gets the job done perfectly. Good luck this summer! 👍

Ok so I've been hauling big rigs for years and honestly, you gotta be cautious with that payload. Since you're doing a 5th wheel, skip the weight-distribution hitch—that's for bumper pulls! I've been using the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch for GM Puck System and it's literally amazing for stability. To save cash, check out the TST 507 Tire Pressure Monitoring System on sale; it's a lifesaver for avoiding blowouts. Seriously, safety first!! gl!
