Hey everyone! I just picked up a new GMC Sierra 2500 HD and I’m planning to start hauling my 14,000 lb horse trailer regularly. I want to make sure I’m fully equipped for safety and long hauls. I’m specifically looking for advice on high-quality weight distribution hitches and whether you guys recommend upgraded towing mirrors or a specific TPMS for the trailer. I've looked at a few brands like B&W and Curt, but I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by the options. What are the 'must-have' accessories you’ve found most useful for your Sierra? Any specific brands or setups that have made your towing experience much smoother?

I went through this last year when I first started hauling heavy with my Sierra, and tbh, it’s a total rabbit hole! I started with a standard setup, but the "chucking" from a 14k trailer was actually insane on my lower back. I ended up switching my whole rig around after some technical digging.

Here’s what made my towing experience wayyy smoother:

* Gen-Y GH-1324 Executive Torsion Flex Weight Distribution Hitch - This thing uses rubber torsion members that basically absorb all the road shock before it hits the truck.
* TST 507 Series Trailer TPMS with 4 Cap Sensors - I love this because it gives real-time temp and pressure readings, which is crucial cuz trailer tires get hot fast!

Quick tip: Always use a tongue weight scale to ensure you've got exactly 10-15% of the load on the hitch. It's the best way to stop sway before it starts! gl with the new truck! 👍

sooo, congrats on the new truck! seriously, hauling a 14,000 lb trailer with live animals is highkey stressful. im still kinda a beginner at this myself, but im basically obsessed with safety cuz i dont want anything going wrong with my horses back there. it's better to be safe than sorry, right?

for your hitch, i know you mentioned a few brands already, but i ended up going with the Equal-i-zer 4-point Sway Control Hitch 16,000 lbs after a lot of research. it’s a bit of a workout to set up, but the way it handles sway when big rigs fly past you on the highway is worth it for the peace of mind. it honestly feels really stable even in wind.

also, i was super worried about a hidden flat tire (blowouts are literally my nightmare), so i picked up the TireMinder i10 RV TPMS with 6 Transmitters. honestly, being able to see the pressure and temp in real-time on the display makes the drive way less nerve-wracking. another thing i recommend is a camera system. I use the Haloview MC7108 Wireless Backup Camera System to monitor the horses inside the trailer while i'm driving. i mean, it just makes the whole experience way smoother when u can actually see they’re doing okay back there. anyway, definitely double-check all your weight ratings and maybe even get a professional to look at ur setup first just to be sure. good luck!!

Actually, I’m gonna have to go against the grain here. While those WD hitches mentioned are decent, if you're hauling 14,000 lbs regularly—especially live weight like horses—you’re basically pushing the limits of what’s comfortable for a bumper pull. Honestly, most guys hauling that much with a Sierra 2500 end up preferring a gooseneck, but if you ARE sticking with the receiver, you need to be precise. I’ve done a ton of market research on this, and I’d skip the basic brands. The Weigh Safe Weight Distribution Hitch is a total game changer because it actually has a built-in scale. Knowing your EXACT tongue weight is HUGE for safety when horses are moving around back there. Most people just guess, which is how you get into trouble with sway. Also, for mirrors... please dont bother with snap-ons. They vibrate like CRAZY at highway speeds. Look into Boost Auto Parts GMC Sierra Towing Mirrors if you don't have the factory ones. They look completely OEM but the build quality is way better than the cheap aftermarket sets. For TPMS, if your Sierra has the ProGrade Trailering system, just get the GMC Integrated Trailer TPMS Sensors. Having the pressure and temp show up right on your factory infotainment screen is SO much cleaner than having extra gadgets cluttering up your dash.

Caught this thread a bit late but youve got some solid advice so far. Hauling horses is a different game because the center of gravity shifts constantly compared to a flatbed. Quick question tho, does your truck have the factory max trailering package with the 3 inch receiver or are you working with the standard 2.5 inch? Knowing that helps narrow down the shank size you actually need for that 14k load. I usually look at these two for heavy live loads:

  • B&W Trailer Hitches Continuum Weight Distribution Hitch: This one is built like a tank and very consistent with sway control. Its a bit heavy to lug around but the reliability is top tier for long hauls.
  • Weigh Safe True Tow Weight Distribution Hitch: I like this because it has a built-in scale. Since horse weight can vary depending on which stalls you use, being able to see your tongue weight in real time is a huge safety win for stability. Both are very reliable brands that wont let you down. Let me know about that receiver size and I can give you a better steer on the specific specs.

Oh man, congrats on the new Sierra 2500 HD!! That truck is LITERALLY a beast for hauling. I've been towing heavy for over 12 years and honestly you dont always need the most expensive gear to stay safe. Since ur looking to save some cash, I HIGHLY recommend the CURT 17501 TruTrack Weight Distribution Hitch with Sway Control. It's usually around $480 and it basically performs just as well as the $1,000 setups I've used in the past... seriously. For TPMS, skip those pricey dealer kits and grab the TireMinder Solar Powered Trailer TPMS with 4 Transmitters—it’s amazing and usually under $180! If your truck doesnt have the factory tow mirrors, dont drop $800 on OEM ones yet... just get the Fit System 80920 Snap-on Towing Mirrors for like $55. They're a total lifesaver for the money and stay really steady on the highway. You’re gonna LOVE how that 2500 pulls that trailer! What kind of horses are you hauling?? 👍
