What are the absolute must-have accessories for a GMC Canyon AT4X if I want to take it off-road? I just picked mine up yesterday and I am so pumped but honestly I have no idea what I am doing lol. Sorry if this is a total noob question but the truck looks so capable already so do I even need to add anything else?? I have about $2000 saved up for upgrades before my trip to Colorado next month. I keep seeing people talk about recovery boards and air compressors but its all kind of confusing. Should I get a winch first or just better floor mats? I really dont want to get stuck out there or break my brand new truck...
Just saw this thread. Honestly, it is a bit disappointing how many people skip over the heavy duty recovery side of things until they are actually stuck in a gulch. I have had issues with standard tow straps in the past and they are just not as good as expected when you are actually stuck in deep Colorado mud or snow. Since you have a $2000 budget, you really need to look at high-quality recovery gear rather than just aesthetics. Here is what I would look at.
Static straps are okay for towing on flat ground, but for off-roading, you want a kinetic rope. It uses energy to bungee you out. Pros: Way less stress on your frame. Cons: Requires another vehicle to help.
Product: Yankum Ropes 7/8 inch x 30 foot Kinetic Recovery Rope
Unfortunately, metal D-rings can become lethal projectiles if a strap snaps. I have moved entirely to soft shackles because they are just much safer for a beginner. Pros: Safer, lighter, and wont rattle against your bumper. Cons: Can be damaged by sharp metal edges if you are not careful.
Product: Factor 55 Crosby Soft Shackle 10 inch
A winch is the ultimate self-recovery tool, but they are heavy and require a mounting plate which might eat your budget. Pros: You can get yourself out without help. Cons: Very expensive and adds weight to the front end.
Product: Warn VR EVO 10-S Winch with Synthetic Rope Stick to the rope and shackles first, then maybe a winch later once you get more experience. Safe travels in CO.
Saw this earlier but just now responding. Unfortunately, many people make the mistake of buying cheap 12V plug-in compressors, but I've had issues with them failing repeatedly on 33-inch tires. They simply aren't as good as expected for a truck as capable as the AT4X. For your Colorado trip, you need a methodical approach to tire management. Airing down is mandatory for traction on rocky trails, but you must be able to air back up before hitting the pavement. I strongly suggest the ARB High Output On-Board Air Compressor 12V for a permanent install or the VIAIR 400P Portable Compressor Kit for a solid portable option. To manage the pressure, the ARB ARB505 E-Z Deflator Kit is much more efficient than using a generic gauge. It's a technical necessity to keep your sidewalls safe... dont skip this or you'll regret it later when you're stuck with a burnt-out pump.
Man, I am so stoked for you! The AT4X is an amazing platform and honestly, it is such a blast to drive. I remember the first time I took mine out into the dirt, I was literally shaking because I didnt want to get that first rock chip on a brand new truck. Before you drop that 2000 bucks, I have a couple of questions for you:
> What are the absolute must-have accessories for a GMC Canyon AT4X if I want to take it off-road? Dude, congrats on the new truck! The AT4X is a total beast right out of the box so you dont need to go crazy with big mods yet. Honestly, the most important thing for Colorado is being able to air down your tires for traction. I love using an ARB Compressor because it makes airing back up so fast... nothing ruins a trip like waiting forever to hit the highway. You definitely want some recovery boards too. Just grab some Maxtrax Boards and call it a day, they're amazing for getting out of sticky spots. Forget the winch for now tbh, it's heavy and you probably wont need it if you stay on the main trails. Just get a solid set of WeatherTech Floor Liners to protect that nice interior from all the mountain mud! Youre gonna have a blast out there!
