Which trailer hitch is best for GMC Terrain towing?

I'm looking to add a hitch to my GMC Terrain for a small utility trailer. I’m torn between a Class II and Class III and really want to avoid any major bumper modifications. Has anyone had better luck with Curt versus Draw-Tite for fitment? Which specific model would you recommend for the best clearance and easy installation?

Curious about one thing: what's the year of your Terrain? Watch out for the Draw-Tite 76419 Class III Trailer Hitch if you have the hands-free liftgate, as it can sometimes interfere with the sensor.

Hey! I've spent years bolting these things on, and honestly, you'll want to avoid the Class II options altogether. The main issue is the 1.25-inch receiver—it's super limiting for accessories. FWIW, I've seen people struggle with the Class II fitment on the Terrain only to realize they can't even swap in a standard bike rack later.

In my experience, the Curt 13293 Class 3 Trailer Hitch is the gold standard for this vehicle. I've installed plenty of these and the bolt-up process is much cleaner than the Draw-Tite equivalent. It tucks up nicely under the fascia without needing any aggressive bumper surgery, though you might need a tiny bit of trim depending on your specific year. Just a heads up though: definitely don't skip the torque wrench! If you don't hit the 75-110 lb-ft spec on those frame bolts, you're asking for rattles or worse. Honestly, stick with the Class III 2-inch receiver for the best clearance and versatility. Hope this helps!

Seconding the recommendation above. Honestly, skipping the Class II is the smartest move for your wallet. I've been there, and the limited accessories are a total headache.

Since you're worried about clearance and cost, I'd suggest the Curt 13393 Class 3 Trailer Hitch. It's usually a bit cheaper than Draw-Tite and sits high enough to stay discreet without hacking up your bumper. Just be careful with the install—prop it up with a jack if you're doing it solo! Hope this helps!
