Hey everyone! I finally pulled the trigger on a new Civic Type R, and man, it definitely lives up to the hype. While the car is incredible right out of the box, I’m already getting the itch to sharpen it up a bit without ruining the daily driveability. I’m mostly using it for weekend mountain runs and maybe a few track days a year.
I’ve been doing some research, but there are so many options out there that it's a bit overwhelming. I’m specifically looking into things that actually improve the driving feel or longevity. For example, I’ve heard that heat soak can be a bit of an issue on the K20C1 engine during hard sessions, so I'm considering an upgraded intercooler or even a better oil cooler as a priority. I’m also debating whether I should swap the stock wheels for a set of lighter 18-inch alloys to get a bit more meat on the tires for better grip and a slightly more forgiving ride.
I want to keep that 'OEM+' vibe, so I'm not looking for anything too loud or over-the-top. For those of you who have lived with the CTR for a while, what performance accessories or mods would you consider essential first steps? Should I focus on the cooling system, better brake pads, or maybe a high-flow intake first?
+1 to what was said earlier. Cooling is huge, but honestly, for safety, dont sleep on your brakes. Boiling fluid is a nightmare on track... i think Motul RBF 600 Factory Line Racing Brake Fluid is the best budget move at like $20 a bottle. Also, check out EBC Yellowstuff Brake Pads if you want a sharper bite without spending thousands on a big brake kit. Basically essential for those mountain runs, right? gl!
Totally agree about cooling! You might also consider Swift Springs Spec-R Lowering Springs. They're pretty cheap, offer a 1-inch drop, and sharpen handling without ruining the ride, i think. Just be careful!
Congrats on the pick up! Honestly if you want that sharper feel without ruining the car, you gotta start with the shifter. I swapped in the Acuity Instruments Fully Adjustable Performance Short Shifter myself and its probably the best bang for buck mod out there. It makes the gear changes feel so much more mechanical and precise, totally changes the vibe of the car! Since you mentioned heat soak, you definitely want the PRL Motorsports Billet Intercooler Upgrade. I installed mine in a few hours and the drop in intake temps is fantastic for keeping the power consistent during hard runs. Most people skip the intercooler cuz it looks hard to do, but its basically just a bumper pull and some bolts. For the wheels, if you want something light and tough for track days, check out the Apex VS-5RS 18x9.5 ET45 5x120. Going down to 18s gives you that extra meat on the tires which helps so much with grip and ride quality on those rough mountain roads!
Seconding the recommendation above, honestly. I tried a cheap intake first and it was a total letdown—threw a CEL almost immediately... so annoying. If your worried about heat, maybe look at the Mishimoto Performance Intercooler for 2023+ Honda Civic Type R FL5. It helps, but install is a pain... is there an easier one? Also, definitely swap to 18s. I run Titan 7 T-S5 18x9.5 +45 5x120 Forged Wheels and the ride is way better. Just dont expect miracles.
Stumbled upon this and honestly, the whole aftermarket scene for the FL5 and FK8 right now is a total mess. I am incredibly satisfied with the car itself, but the pricing for performance accessories is such a scam. It drives me crazy how these premium brands are basically charging a fifty percent Type R tax for parts that do not even have better tolerances than the stock components. I have been deep-diving into the technical specs between several of the big names and it is just ridiculous; quality is going downhill while prices keep climbing. Companies just do not care about the engineering like they used to, they just want to cash in on the hype train. It is so frustrating when you are trying to stay methodical about a build but every brand is just selling the same mediocre stuff with a fancy logo. Basically feels like a massive cash grab lately and it makes the whole process way more stressful than it needs to be.
For your situation, i'd probably be really careful about jumping into big engine mods too fast. I actually just got mine a few months ago and honestly, I was sooo terrified of messing something up or voiding my warranty right away. I mean, its a huge investment, right? Im still kinda new to this whole modding scene, but I've been reading a ton because I'm super cautious about reliability and keeping things safe. From what I've seen, you basically have three main paths to take. Option A is focusing on the cooling like you mentioned. I think people say an upgraded intercooler or oil cooler is a must if ur gonna track it, but idk if you really need it just for mountain runs? I heard it helps with heat soak but it's a big job to install. Option B is switching to 18-inch wheels. This is probably what I'm gonna do first cuz the stock 20s are like... sooo scary on potholes. You get way more sidewall and I think it makes the car feel more planted. Option C is just sticking to better brake pads. It's way safer than messing with the engine or turbo stuff. Personally, I'd suggest starting with the wheels and maybe some better pads first. Messing with the cooling system feels a bit advanced and I'd be worried about leaks if you dont do it perfectly. Plus, the ride quality on 18s is literally night and day from what I've heard. Just make sure to talk to a professional shop before you start tearing things apart... better safe than sorry, you know? gl!
