What are the actual must-have performance upgrades for the new Civic Type R because I am totally lost and everything I read online feels like it is written in a different language. I just picked up my FL5 last week here in Phoenix and I love it but people keep telling me I need to change things immediately or it will overheat or something? I have about $3,000 saved up to spend on it right now but I dont even know what a downpipe does or if I need a new intake. My buddy says I need an intercooler first because of the heat out here but then I see people talking about tuning the car and I am scared of breaking the warranty since this is my only car. I really just want it to feel a bit faster and sound better without ruining the ride quality for my commute.

  • Intercooler?
  • Exhaust?
  • Tires?

Sorry if this is a total noob question but I am so frustrated trying to figure out which brands are good and which ones are just for show. Do I start with the tires or some computer chip thing? I just want to make sure I am spending my money on stuff that actually makes a difference and wont blow up my engine...

In my experience, you'll definitely need to drop coolant temps and improve grip tho:

I've been a bit disappointed with how the stock cooling handles the desert, honestly. It's just not as good as expected for a track car. To keep it safe, I'd get a HKS Oil Cooler Kit Honda Civic Type R FL5 to protect that engine long-term. For sound, the Milltek Sport Resonated Cat-Back Exhaust FL5 is a high-quality choice that wont drone during your commute.

tl;dr: focus on cooling first because of the phoenix heat before you worry about power. ngl being in a desert means your fl5 is gonna struggle with heat soak way before you run out of power. i would suggest starting with the PRL Motorsports Billet Intercooler as it is basically a safety mod for your engine in that climate. be careful with any computer chips or tunes right now tho... if you are worried about the warranty, stay away from hondata or ktuner because the dealer will see it. for better sound without risking much i would just get a PRL Motorsports High-Flow Drop-In Air Filter and maybe a decent exhaust like the Remark Catback Exhaust System if you want more noise. just make sure to keep your stock parts in case you need to go back for service. better to be safe than sorry with your daily driver.
