honestly I’m so stressed out right now I just picked up my FL5 in championship white last Tuesday and I’m already seeing tiny little pinprick chips on the lower skirts. it feels like the paint is made of wet tissue paper or something and I’m honestly so frustrated because I saved up for three years for this car and now I’m scared to even drive it to work. I live out in rural Pennsylvania and the roads are just constant loose gravel and construction debris and it’s killing me. I’ve got about $1500 set aside for some immediate mods before the snow and salt start hitting in November but I don't even know where to start. should I be looking at those oversized rally style mud flaps or is that gonna look stupid on a civic? do people actually do the hood film themselves or is that a disaster waiting to happen? I really need to know what the absolute essential exterior bits are to actually protect the bodywork from falling apart before I even hit 5k miles... what are you guys actually running to keep the rocks from shredding the fenders?
Building on the earlier suggestion, mud flaps are just one piece of the puzzle because the FL5 track is so wide. In my experience, the front tires throw rocks straight at the rear doors and fenders too. Since you have a decent budget, look into XPEL Ultimate Plus Paint Protection Film. It is a self-healing film that actually stops those pinpricks you are seeing. I really wouldnt try the hood film yourself tho. It is a total nightmare to get right without a clean room and experience. Here is my take on how to spend that 1500 effectively:
Agreeing with the advice so far, especially regarding the wide stance being a sandblaster for the rockers. Safety-wise, you also need to worry about long-term structural reliability if that PA road salt gets into the bare metal of those chips. Its not just about aesthetics at that point because once the corrosion starts under the paint, its a nightmare to stop.
Congrats on the FL5, tho i gotta be honest, the paint on these things is super thin. Unfortunately, i found out the hard way with my previous car that honda paint is just not as durable as it should be for the price we pay. It’s definitely disappointing when you save up that long just to see chips after a week. Honestly, i tried to do a DIY hood film on my old civic once and it was a total disaster. Bubbles everywhere and i ended up wasting like 200 bucks. Just dont do it yourself, especially with championship white where any little speck of dust trapped under the film will drive you crazy. Since you're in PA with all that gravel, you 100% need rock guards immediately. I tried some generic ones first but they were not as good as expected and rattled like crazy. I finally switched to ZL1 Addons Deluxe Rock Guards Honda Civic Type R FL5 and they’re much better for keeping those pinpricks off the side skirts without looking too bulky. If you really want max protection tho, Rally Armor Mud Flaps 2023+ Honda Civic Type R are the way to go, even if they look a bit loud. With your 1500 budget, id skip the fancy engine mods for now and put 1200 into a professional front end PPF. Most shops can do the bumper and partial hood for that price. Its the only way to actually sleep at night when you hear that gravel hitting the wheel wells... its better than watching your car get shredded by the salt in a few months.
