Just picked up a 2024 Aviator Grand Touring last week and Im already lowkey stressing about the charging setup in my garage. Ive had a Fusion Energi for years so I thought I knew the drill with J1772 plugs but this Lincoln is a whole different animal and the battery capacity is way bigger than my old Ford. The factory mobile charger that came with the car feels kinda cheap for such an expensive SUV and my garage here in suburban Chicago gets absolutely freezing in the winter, which I know from experience makes those plastic cables stiff as a board and impossible to coil up.

I need to get a dedicated Level 2 wall box installed by the end of next month because the standard 110v outlet is taking like 14 or 15 hours to top off the battery after my commute which is just insane and wont work for me long term. I have about 600 or 700 dollars set aside for the hardware itself.

  • Grizzl-E (heard they are tough for cold)
  • ChargePoint Home Flex
  • Wallbox Pulsar

Which of these actually plays nice with the Lincoln Way app or should I just get a dumb charger that just works without the wifi headache? Also are there any specific cord organizers or holsters you guys recommend so I dont trip over the cable every morning while getting the kids in the car?...

I have been very satisfied with my charger setup for over a year. Since you are in Chicago, the Grizzl-E Classic Level 2 EV Charger 40 Amp NEMA 14-50 is the only smart move. Its heavy-duty aluminum enclosure is NEMA 4 rated and the cable is specifically designed to stay flexible down to -22F. I have had zero issues with it during the worst winter freezes.

  • Skip the WiFi. The Lincoln Way app manages the charging schedules and pre-conditioning just fine. A smart charger usually just adds a redundant failure point.
  • Get a Lectron EV Charger Nozzle Holster and Cable Organizer. It keeps the plug secure and the cable off the floor so you are not tripping over it while loading the car. Everything works well and the 40-amp output maxes out the Aviators capacity with no complaints.

Just found this thread. If youre worried about safety and long-term reliability in those Chicago winters, you might want to consider the Emporia Level 2 EV Charger 48 Amp. I have seen too many people deal with melted NEMA 14-50 outlets because they used cheap parts or didnt tighten the terminals enough. I would suggest hardwiring the unit directly to your panel instead of using a plug-in version. Its much safer for high-draw appliances like this and helps avoid those plastic components getting brittle and failing.

  • Hardwire the connection: Eliminates a major failure point in the garage.
  • Check the breaker: Make sure your electrician uses a high-quality breaker that can handle the constant load.
  • Organization: Grab a Lectron J1772 Cable Organizer and Holster to keep the cord from getting stepped on. I once had a circuit breaker trip constantly because of a poor connection on a similar setup... it is not something you want to wake up to when your SUV is still at 10% charge.

Id be careful with the Wallbox Pulsar Plus 40 Amp Level 2 in Chicago. Its super compact but that cable gets pretty stiff once it hits zero degrees. I suggest looking at the ChargePoint Home Flex 50 Amp Level 2 Charger instead.

  • ChargePoint: Cord is way more flexible in the cold.
  • Wallbox: Might struggle if your garage wifi is spotty. The ChargePoint cable is worth the extra cash for our winters, tbh.
