What should I actually be putting on my new Defender for some serious trail work this summer? Just picked up a 2023 110 and Im planning a trip out to Moab in July so I need to get it ready. I've been looking at stuff online and everyone says to get a winch and a roof rack but then I see guys saying the weight on the roof messes with the center of gravity too much for steep climbs which has me worried. Im kinda torn on whether to go with the factory expedition rack or something like a Front Runner. Also I only have about 3k left in my budget after the down payment so I cant just buy everything at once. Is a snorkel actually worth it or is it just for show mostly? Im seeing conflicting stuff about the air intake setup...
> Is a snorkel actually worth it Honestly, I'm satisfied with the Warn Zeon 10-S Winch 10000lb for reliability over the Smittybilt X2O Gen3 10K Winch. Snorkels just handle dust; recovery gear is a far better Moab investment...
honestly, i spent way too much time worrying about the roof rack thing before my first Moab trip. Choosing the Front Runner Slimline II Roof Rack Kit Land Rover Defender 110 worked well for my gear, but you really gotta be careful with how much you pack up there. I remember one steep section on Fins and Things where I felt that extra weight shifting and it was a bit nerve-wracking, so i keep the heavy stuff in the trunk now. If you only got 3k, i'd skip the snorkel for now. Its mostly for dust and looks, and mine hasnt seen enough deep water to justify the cost yet. Better to spend that cash on some solid rubber like the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac 255/65R19 because those factory tires wont survive the sharp rocks out west. Swapping mine before I left worked out great... saved me a huge headache when things got technical.
