Just picked up my 2023 Defender 110 and I am so pumped to finally get it out in the mud! Planning a trip to the Ozarks in three weeks so I need to gear up fast. Ive been looking online and keep seeing people argue about winches vs recovery boards.

Some guys say a winch is a total waste if you arent doing hardcore rock crawling but others say its the only way to stay safe if youre solo out there. I have about $3k to spend for this first round of upgrades and I am also worried a big roof rack might make it too top heavy for the trails. What are the actual essentials I need before I head out so I dont get stuck?

Honestly, skip the roof rack for now and put that money into a solid winch setup. I have been very satisfied with mine, works well every time i need a tug out of a rut. It keeps the weight low so no tipping issues.

Congrats on the 110! Seriously, that thing is an absolute beast. Since you're hitting the Ozarks solo in three weeks, skip the roof rack for now and focus 100 percent on recovery gear. Honestly, if you're solo, you need a way to get yourself out of a mess without waiting for a tow. Top-heavy rigs are annoying on those off-camber trails anyway. Here is what I would grab with that $3k:

Im not so sure about the winch idea right away. @Reply #2 - good point on keeping the center of gravity low, but unfortunately, I had a massive headache with the wiring on mine and it honestly wasnt as good as expected for the cost. Honestly, it felt like wasting a ton of money for peace of mind that didnt even work when I finally needed it. Its kinda frustrating when you think youre prepared but the gear lets you down. Honestly, the whole experience reminded me of when I tried to save money on a cheap tent for a trip to the Smokies last year. It was supposed to be waterproof but leaked the first night, so I ended up sleeping in the front seat of my truck. While I was sitting there, I started watching these YouTube videos about tiny house living. Did you see that one guy who built a cabin out of old shipping containers? It looked cool but I bet the insulation is a nightmare in the winter. Plus, where do you even put the plumbing? My cousin actually tried to build a shed like that and it just became a giant hornet nest by July. I spent like three hours down that rabbit hole and forgot I was even camping. Anyway lol, sorry kinda went off topic there. Youll love the Ozarks tho, the views are killer.
