So I finally got my FL5 out to Willow Springs last weekend and man, it was a blast but I ran into some stuff I didnt expect. Ive been tracking cars for like 8 years now, mostly older Hondas and a WRX back in the day, so I thought I knew what to expect with the Type R being so capable out of the box. But about 15 minutes into my second session, I definitely felt the power start to pull back. Pretty sure it was heat soak because it was like 95 degrees out there in the desert. I also noticed the pedal getting a bit soft toward the end of the straightaway which caught me off guard since these Brembos are supposed to be top tier.

Im looking to spend maybe 3 or 4 grand over the next two months to get it ready for my next event in October. I already did the basic high-temp fluid swap but clearly that wasnt enough. I was looking at upgraded intercoolers—maybe Mishimoto or PRL? I hear the PRL stuff is the gold standard for the K20C1 but I dont want to just throw money at parts that dont actually improve the lap times. I was thinking of focusing on a few specific areas:

  • upgraded intercooler to stop the heat soak issues
  • better track pads that wont crumble after one weekend
  • maybe a rear motor mount to help with the shifting

The motor mount thing is because I keep getting some weird wheel hop on the lower gear exits and it's killing my momentum out of the turns. Has anyone had success with the Acuity shifter parts too? People rave about them but I wonder if its overkill for a car that is still technically my daily driver here in SoCal. I dont want the cabin vibrating like crazy but I need it to feel more solid.

Basically I want to know what the must-haves are that actually make a difference in performance and reliability under stress, not just eye candy under the hood. What are you guys running that actually survived a full track day without the ECU pulling timing? Are there specific pads that wont squeal like a bus for the drive home but can handle the heat better than the OEM ones?...

I've been super satisfied with the Mishimoto Performance Intercooler Kit and Hasport Performance Rear Motor Mount 62A. The mount fixed my wheel hop without making the car rattle. Like someone mentioned, cooling is everything, so I also use Ferodo DS2500 Brake Pads for heat management without the noise. Check the technical threads on CivicXI... they have spreadsheets on temperature deltas that really help you avoid buying stuff you dont need.

You need the PRL Motorsports Billet Intercooler immediately! Its amazing for engine safety and stops power loss. Also, Project Mu Club Racer Brake Pads are fantastic for track reliability!
