just picked up a new TrailSport and im planning a trip to the Ozarks in a few weeks so im trying to figure out what i actually need to buy. i read some threads saying the factory skids are enough but then others say the gas tank is way too exposed so my logic was to prioritize armor but then i thought maybe a good recovery kit and some traction boards are smarter since im on a $1500 budget for now.
i dont wanna overspend on stuff i wont use but i also dont wanna crack a pan. the stock tires seem okay but i saw one guy saying the sidewalls are weak... what would you guys grab first?
Building on the earlier suggestion, I've spent way too many years trail-side wishing I'd prioritized protection over the flashy stuff. Honestly, the Ozarks can be brutal on the underbelly. My first trip out there in a stock rig ended with a huge dent in my fuel tank guard... scared me enough to never go back without real steel. Since you're worried about that exposure, here's how I see the priority:
Building on the earlier suggestion, I would suggest being careful with those factory sidewalls on the rocky Ozark trails. Before committing your budget, are you planning on mostly fire roads or more technical climbs? Tbh you might want to consider a VIAIR 400P Portable Air Compressor so you can air down. It helps with traction and protects the tires, but you definitely dont want to be stranded without a way to pump back up...
I agree about the compressor. Airing down is basically the best move for traction and it helps keep those sidewalls from getting pinched on sharp rocks. High pressure on rocky trails is usually what leads to those failures people talk about. Before you spend that $1500, are you going solo or with a group? Also, what kind of trails are we talking about... just gravel forest roads or are you looking for rocky washouts? Armor is a solid investment but it adds weight and eats your budget fast. Having others with you means you can probably get away with the factory skids for this trip and use their recovery gear if things get hairy. Solo trips are different. You have to prioritize being self-sufficient over everything else. Its really a choice between protecting the car or making sure you arent stranded.
