What are the absolute must-have accessories for a Honda Pilot TrailSport if I am planning on actually taking it off-road for the first time? I just bought a 2024 model and I am honestly kind of scared of scratching it or getting stuck in the middle of nowhere. I live in North Carolina near the mountains and really want to try some of the easier fire roads but I feel like I am totally unprepared and don't know the lingo at all.

Sorry if these are dumb questions but I have no idea what I am doing. My budget is around $1200 for now and I need to get stuff by next Friday because we have a trip planned. Do I need those traction board things I see on every truck? And what about a better air pump for the tires because I heard you have to let air out but I dont know how much or how to get it back in.

The TrailSport is supposed to be off-road ready but I keep seeing people talk about adding more protection underneath or getting different tires even though mine are brand new. Is the stuff that comes with the car enough for a complete beginner or am I going to regret not buying more gear before I leave the driveway...

Yo, congrats on the new rig. Honestly, dont sweat those NC fire roads too much, the TrailSport is actually pretty capable for what it is. But since you are worried about getting stuck, I would suggest grabbing a few basics just for peace of mind. Seen too many folks get stranded because they didn't have a way to fix a simple mistake... Make sure to grab these before Friday:

  • A reliable air source like the Viair 88P Portable Air Compressor 120 PSI so you can air back up after the trail.
  • Some MaxTrax MKII Recovery Boards Safety Orange because they are basically a cheat code if you lose traction in soft dirt or mud. Just be careful with the ground clearance tho. Even with the factory skids, you can still bang up the plastic bumper bits if you arent watching your line. Take it slow and you will be fine.
