honestly so sick of the heat soak on my FK8 after like two laps, it is killing the fun! finally ready to drop cash.
what performance accessories actually help with cooling and power? need them fast...
@Reply #2 - good point! Honestly though, hardware is only half the battle. You should definitely look into the Hondata FlashPro FK8 Type R first. It is an amazing tool that lets you lower fan trigger temperatures via the ECU! This is way more budget-friendly than doing every cooler at once and gives you total control over thermal logic. Totally fantastic for San Diego track days!
I went through the same thing last summer. Honestly, the best bang for your buck to stop that heat soak is an upgraded intercooler. I put in the Mishimoto Performance Intercooler Honda Civic Type R FK8 Silver and it worked way better than stock. It's a solid fix that holds up well after several laps. Let me know if you need help with the install steps!
Good to know!
@Reply #5 - good point! This thread is basically a gold mine for anyone trying to survive a track day in the SoCal heat. Totally agree that you need a multi-pronged approach. While the ECU tweaks are fantastic, im a huge fan of the hardware side too. I recently did a DIY swap for the PRL Motorsports High Volume Intake System Civic Type R FK8 and the data logs are just incredible! It pulls in so much more CFM and the heat shield actually does its job unlike the plastic stock box. To really double down on that, you should grab a PTP Turbo Blankets Honda Civic Type R FK8 Lava Turbo Blanket too. It keeps the turbo heat contained so it doesnt bake your intake pipe and sensors. It is a total game changer for keeping those IATs stable after a few hot laps. Both are super easy to install in your driveway with basic sockets. Youll definitely stay under budget and have a way more reliable car for your trip!
Saw this earlier but just getting home. Man, San Diego heat is no joke for the FK8. I remember my first time at Willow Springs, I was hitting limp mode by the third lap because the oil temps were touching 270 degrees. It was a nightmare. People focus on the intercooler, which is fine, but you really gotta be careful about the oil temps if you want to stay out for more than five minutes. I spent weeks logging data on my FK8 and noticed the ECU starts pulling timing way earlier than people think. I ended up going with a thicker core radiator and a dedicated oil cooler to actually stay on track. Here is what I would suggest if you are trying to stay under that 1500 mark:
