Hey everyone! I recently picked up a new Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid, and I’m absolutely loving the fuel economy so far. However, I’m planning to start using it for some light towing this summer—mostly hauling a small utility trailer for yard work and a couple of jet skis for weekend trips. Since this is my first time towing with a hybrid powertrain, I want to make sure I have all the right gear to do it safely without putting unnecessary strain on the electrical system or the transmission.
I’ve already had the OEM hitch and 4-pin wiring harness installed by the dealer, but I feel like there’s more to it than just the basics. For those of you who have been towing with the Santa Fe Hybrid, what are the 'must-have' accessories you’d recommend? I’m specifically curious about whether I should invest in a wireless brake controller since the hybrid setup is a bit more complex than a standard gas engine. Also, do you find that extended side mirrors are necessary given the Santa Fe’s width, or do the stock mirrors provide enough visibility for a standard trailer?
I’m also looking for recommendations on a good hitch lock and maybe a specific ball mount that minimizes that annoying rattle while driving. My budget for these extra accessories is around $400-$500, as I’d rather buy quality gear once than regret it on the highway. Are there any specific brands that play particularly well with the Hyundai’s sensor suite? I don't want to accidentally trigger the rear parking sensors every time I put it in reverse with the trailer attached!
Would love to hear about your setups and if there are any 'hidden gem' tools that made your towing experience smoother. What are the absolute essential towing accessories you think every Santa Fe Hybrid owner should have in their kit?
sooo i just started towing with my santa fe hybrid too and honestly i was kinda nervous about the transmission!! i suggest looking at the Curt Echo Mobile Brake Controller 51180 since you dont have to mess with the hybrid wiring at all. i think it's basically the safest way to go... but be careful with the sensors!! for the rattle, i'd definitely get the Curt 27204 Anti-Rattle Hitch Pin over a standard one because it's way quieter... good luck!!
For your situation, I'm honestly super excited for you! Safety is HUGE when towing with a hybrid... i mean you dont want to stress that battery pack right?? Since the others mentioned the Curt and Tekonsha, i'd look at the Autobrake Motion-Activated Trailer Brake Controller. It's amazing cuz it's a surge-style setup that lives on the trailer, so zero wiring into your Santa Fe's complex dash!!
Also, for that annoying rattle, I highkey recommend the Roadmaster 061 Quiet Hitch. It literally locks the shank in place so there's zero clanking! For mirrors, I think the stock ones are okay for jet skis, but if you want to be 100% safe, the Dometic Milenco Grand Aero 3 Towing Mirrors are fantastic because they don't block your blind spot sensors as much... i think! gl with the new rig!!
I went through this last year. Honestly, I was so worried about the hybrid's sensors going haywire! Basically, I found that the Tekonsha P3 Electronic Brake Control 90195 is a solid wired alternative if you want a fixed display, but you'll need a specific adapter. To stop the clanking, I tried a cheap pin vs the Rhino USA Hitch Tightener Anti-Rattle Clamp. The clamp is way better because it *literally* locks the mount solid. Your stock mirrors should be fine for jet skis tho, they're not that wide!
Totally agree with the above! Especially about the wireless brake controller... it's a lifesaver for our hybrid systems cuz you dont wanna mess with the factory wiring and risk your warranty!! i'm still a bit of a beginner at this, but i've been sooo nervous about the transmission too. basically, if ur worried about the budget, just get any locking hitch pin from a brand like Master Lock or Rhino USA... they're usually pretty solid for the price. regarding the mirrors, i honestly think you should just grab some universal clip-on ones from a brand like Milenco... they really help with the blind spots without breaking the bank!! plus, just a quick tip: you'll probably have to manually disable the rear parking sensors in the settings when you're backing up, or they'll go crazy lol. anyway, safety first!! gl! 👍
Quick question - before I dive into specific gear, have you checked if your jet ski trailer actually has brakes? Most small utility trailers and PWC setups are under the 1,500lb limit and dont even have them, so you might not even need a controller!
In my experience towing with Hyundais over the years, I've tried many setups and honestly, I'm a bit more conservative with the hybrid's electronics. If you DO need a controller, comparing the wireless options is key. While others mentioned the Curt, I actually prefer the Lippert Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller 51180 (marketed under Curt) vs the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller EBRH-ACC. The Redarc is better for safety IMO because it's a permanent install that doesn't rely on Bluetooth, which can be glitchy on long trips.
For the rattle, I've found the Trimax TH4 4" Drop Heavy Duty Forged Ball Mount combined with a Proven Industries Model 2516-AS Trailer Lock is basically the gold standard for security and peace of mind. Just gotta be careful about those backup sensors... they're sensitive!! gl with the new setup!
