honestly so fed up with these cheap universal racks I bought off Amazon for my 2023 Santa Cruz. they whistle like crazy above 40 mph and I swear one of the feet is already scratching my paint which is just great. I have a big kayak trip planned for mid-July up near Bend and I cant be dealing with this noise for a 6 hour drive. I need something that actually fits the weird roof rails on this thing properly without feeling like its gonna fly off. budget is like 600 max but I just want quality at this point. what are the actually top rated racks for the Santa Cruz that dont suck? i need to get this sorted before my trip...

Re: "Building on the earlier suggestion, I totally agree..." that getting a solid name brand is worth every penny for peace of mind. I went with a Thule setup and honestly couldnt be happier with how it handles. I was worried about the price but found that if you shop around on sites like etrailer, you can stay under your 600 limit. Heres why I think this works well:

  • The Thule WingBar Evo 118 Load Bars have a textured strip that breaks up airflow so the whistling is basically gone.
  • Using the Thule Evo Clamp Foot Pack ensures the feet actually contour to the Santa Cruz roof line without scratching.
  • The T-track makes mounting kayak carriers super fast. Basically, the aerodynamics are light years ahead of generic bars. Just make sure you install the rubber strips correctly or you might get a tiny bit of wind noise... but otherwise they are silent.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I totally agree that Yakima is top tier! I actually went through three cheap sets before finally finding the perfect setup. I ended up snagging the Rhino-Rack Vortex ROC25 Flush Roof Rack and it saved me a solid 100 bucks over the Thule equivalent! Seriously, zero whistling even at 80mph on the highway. Its amazing how much better the fit is, totally worth it!

Unfortunately, cheap racks are usually a waste. I had issues with my old set too.

  • Yakima JetStream 50 inch Black Crossbars Theyre silent and wont ruin your finish.

Late to the party but to add to the point above: it is unfortunately true that most universal options are not as good as expected for our trucks. I have had issues with stability on almost every mid-tier setup because the fit kits are usually too generic for the Santa Cruz rail profile.

  • Go with the Thule Edge Flush Rail 720600 system.
  • Use the Thule WingBar Edge 95 for a cleaner, silent profile.
  • Specifically, you need the Thule Fit Kit 186121 for the proper foot-to-rail interface. Quick tip: apply some clear 3M paint protection film under the feet before you mount them. Even the best rubber can trap road grit and scuff your clear coat over a long trip. Dont let the bad experience with the cheap ones ruin your kayak trip, you'll get it dialed in.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I've tracked performance data on a few setups.
