I just picked up my new Hyundai Santa Cruz and I’m absolutely loving it so far! However, since the bed is a bit smaller and has that unique composite build, I’m trying to figure out how to maximize the space for weekend camping trips. I’m currently torn between getting a hard tonneau cover for security or a bed extender to help with hauling longer gear. I’ve also been looking at some rail-mounted crossbars for my mountain bikes, but I'm worried about blocking access to the under-bed trunk. For those of you who have had yours for a while, which bed accessories have been total game-changers and which ones weren't worth the money? What’s the one 'must-have' item you’d recommend for a new owner?
Seconding the recommendation above! I spent weeks doing market research on covers before I realized security is actually #1. The Lomax Stance Hard Tri-Fold Tonneau Cover is amazing cuz it sits flatter than the BakFlip MX4 Hard Folding Truck Bed Cover. Tbh, if you want bikes AND trunk access, the RetraxPRO XR Retractable Truck Bed Cover is basically the gold standard with its T-slot rails. Lesson learned: dont go cheap on the rails!! gl!
Sooo, i'm really satisfied with my setup!! To maximize space cost-effectively, i'd suggest: * Hyundai Santa Cruz OEM Bed Extender (~$320): Increases floor length for long gear.
* Elevate Outdoor Bed Rail Crossbars (~$160): Budget-friendly bike mounting. Technically, high-mount bars won't block the trunk access at all. The extender is highkey the must-have for camping trips... gl!!!
Oh man, congrats on the new truck!! I've had mine for a few months and honestly, it's a game changer for camping trips. Before you go spending a ton though, I gotta ask a couple things: - Are you usually camping solo or with a big crew?
- How heavy are your mountain bikes... like are they e-bikes or standard frames? Knowing that would reallyyy help me give you a better recommendation for the bed setup tbh!
Sooo, congrats on the new truck! Honestly, over the years I've tried many different setups and for camping, cargo security is LITERALLY the most important thing to focus on first. You dont want your gear flying out on the highway or getting snatched while youre away from the camp. Here's what I'd recommend from a safety-first perspective: 1. Go with a solid hard tonneau cover from a brand like Bak or Retrax. It's way more reliable than a soft cover for keeping gear locked and dry. Basically, if they cant see your expensive camping stuff, they wont try to grab it.
2. For the bikes, you should definitely look at any high-clearance rail-mounted bars from Thule or Yakima. High-mounts are the move because they keep the center of gravity stable and wont block that under-bed trunk access.
3. Seriously, grab some heavy-duty ratchet straps from a brand like Rhino USA. I've seen people use cheap bungees and it's actually so scary when things shift mid-drive. Safety first, always!! gl with the new ride.
yo, in my experience a thick rubber mat is a total must-have cuz that bed is way too slippery. I had gear slide and it almost hit my glass, soooo scary!! But before you spend more, I've gotta ask: * what's your actual budget?
* are you more worried about theft or just rain? Ngl, some covers are pretty disappointing and leak everywhere... basically useless!! Just don't want you wasting money.
Bookmarked, thanks!

Came here to say the same thing lol. Great minds think alike I guess.
Omg congrats on the truck!! I totally feel your frustration with the bed size though... ngl it drives me absolutely insane trying to fit everything for a camping trip!! Its like a high-stakes game of Tetris and I always feel like I'm one bag away from a total disaster. I love the truck but man, the struggle to pack safely and keep things from sliding on that composite floor is just so stressful sometimes!! Anyway, just two quick things:
