I just brought home a new QX55 and really want to keep that paint looking sharp. I’m planning to do the ceramic coating myself to save some cash, but I’m a bit nervous about the application process. Do you guys have a favorite DIY kit that’s beginner-friendly but still offers solid long-term protection?

Hi there, and congrats on the new QX55! I've been detailing for years and totally get the DIY nerves. Honestly, the biggest mistake people make is rushing the prep; if you don't strip the factory wax first, the coating won't bond and you'll waste your money!

In my experience, for a beginner-friendly kit that still gives that deep gloss, I would suggest Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light 30ml. I've used it on several cars and it's incredibly forgiving compared to pro-grade stuff. It doesn't flash instantly, so you have time to level it out. I'd pair it with Gtechniq EXO v5 Ultra Durable Hydrophobic Coating 30ml as a top coat for that insane water beading. It makes washing the car so much easier, fwiw. Just take your time and work in small sections! Good luck!

TL;DR from this thread: the consensus is that prep is everything! If you don't strip the old wax and polish out swirls, you're just sealing in the mess. Honestly, for a budget-friendly and super easy application, I'd skip the high-end stuff and grab the Turtle Wax Hybrid Solutions Ceramic Coating 14 fl oz. It’s way more forgiving for beginners than CarPro CQuartz UK 3.0 30ml Kit but still gives that awesome shine and protection for way less cash. Good luck with the QX55!

Totally agree with the guys saying prep is 90% of the work. If you skip the mechanical decontamination (clay bar) and the IPA wipe, youre basically throwing money away. Tbh, looking at the current market, there’s a big shift toward "UV tracer" tech which is a total lifesaver for beginners. While the stuff mentioned above is solid, if you want high-solids protection that’s basically idiot-proof, I’d compare these two for the best ROI: * Adam's Polishes UV Ceramic Coating Kit – This uses a UV flashlight to show exactly where you missed a spot or left a high spot. It takes the guesswork out of the application.
* Avalon King Armor Shield IX – Its basically the market leader for DIY kits because it strikes a great balance between slickness and a 2+ year lifespan without needing professional IR lamps to cure. Quick tip: Always check your garage humidity before starting. If its really humid, the coating will flash way faster than the instructions say, so work in smaller sections. lol don't try to do the whole hood of that QX55 at once or youll be sorry.

Quick question—are you planning to do a machine polish before applying anything? I ask because I unfortunately rushed into using CarPro CQuartz UK 3.0 30ml Kit on my last car without enough correction, and every tiny swirl mark was basically locked under the glass. It looked okay, but not as good as expected for the price. Anyway, let me know your prep plan so I can suggest a kit that fits your budget!

I've coated dozens of cars over the years and found that focusing on ease of use saves you from a lot of headaches later. If you want something that stays looking good for a few years without being a nightmare to apply, these are my go-tos.

  • GYEON Q2 One EVO 30ml: In my experience, this is the most beginner-friendly true ceramic out there. It is a single layer application and the wipe-off is very smooth. The gloss is incredible on dark colors. Only downside is it is not quite as chemical resistant as their pro line, but it is plenty for a QX55 daily driver.
  • DIY Detail Ceramic Coating 30ml: I've tried many coatings and this one has a huge flash window. You basically dont have to worry about high spots as much because you have more time to work. It holds up great against road grime over the long term.
  • Undrdog Pro Coating 30ml: This isnt exactly a traditional ceramic but it performs like one. It is super versatile and you can use it on your trim and glass too without worrying about it streaking. Great if you want to finish the whole car with one bottle and not worry about ruining your plastics.
