I recently fulfilled a lifelong dream and brought home a 1966 Series 1 4.2L E-Type. It’s in great shape, but as any Jaguar owner knows, these cars are as much about the maintenance as they are about the drive. I’m currently setting up my garage to handle more of the routine upkeep myself, and I want to make sure I’m not missing anything crucial. I’ve already got a basic set of wrenches, but I’m quickly realizing this car has some very specific needs.
For example, I’m looking for recommendations on the best knock-off spinners/hammers for the wire wheels that won’t mar the chrome—is a lead hammer still the gold standard, or should I look into a specialized bronze tool? Also, given how tight that engine bay is, are there specific mirrors or long-reach tools that make life easier for checking the triple SU carbs? I’m also curious if there are any particular battery tenders or cooling system pressure testers that fit the E-Type’s unique setup better than others. I really want to stay on top of things before they become major issues. Beyond the standard toolbox, what are the absolute 'must-have' maintenance accessories or specialized gadgets that every E-Type owner should keep in their workshop?

sooo totally agree with the above! +1 for the lead hammer tip... bronze can be super risky for the chrome and i've heard it can even cause hairline cracks if you hit it too hard. tbh im still a bit of a newbie with my own car but i've spent way too much time researching budget fixes cuz these parts get pricey lol. since you're diving into those triple SUs, you might want to consider something like the Gunson G4074 Colortune Single Plug Kit. it's usually around $45 and it basically lets you see the combustion through a glass spark plug. it's way less intimidating than trying to tune by ear when youre just starting out! for reaching the tight spots in the engine bay without breaking the bank, here's what i use:
* Performance Tool W142 6-Piece Extra Long Screwdriver Set - literally like $15 and helps reach those hidden adjustment screws.
* instead of an expensive jaguar-specific pressure tester, the Stant 12270 30 Pound Cooling System and Pressure Cap Tester is a solid budget option. just make sure to get the right adapter for ur radiator cap! be careful when you're poking around those carbs tho... i always worry about dropping a screw into the abyss and never seeing it again haha. but yeah, keeping it simple and cheap where you can helps save for the big repairs later. good luck with the project! 👍

Ok so, congrats! Unfortunately, I've had bad luck with overpriced "specialty" gear. For knock-offs, a cheap Thor 1.5lb Lead Hammer 412 (Option A) is actually safer and more budget-friendly than bronze tools (Option B). * Battery Tender Junior 12V 750mA High Efficiency Charger - reliable and affordable.
* Performance Tool W1145 1-1/4-Inch Telescoping Mirror - essential for those triple carbs. Honestly, just be careful... maybe consult a pro first so you dont break anything? gl!
