Hey everyone! I recently leveled up to a Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit, and while the interior is amazing, I’m finding the cargo space a bit tight for our family camping trips. I’m looking to install a high-quality roof rack, but since the Summit comes with those specific flush chrome side rails and the dual-pane panoramic sunroof, I’m a bit nervous about the fitment.
I’ve been eyeing the Thule WingBar Edge and the Yakima JetStream, but I’ve heard mixed reviews regarding clearance. My main concern is ensuring that whatever I install won't interfere with the sunroof’s operation or create that annoying high-pitched wind whistle when I’m hitting highway speeds. I also want to make sure the mounting hardware doesn’t scuff up the chrome finish on the rails, as I’d like to keep the rig looking sharp.
Has anyone here with a Summit trim found a setup that looks sleek and handles a decent load—like a large cargo box or a couple of kayaks—without any clearance issues? I'm hoping to stay under a budget of $700 if possible. Which specific crossbars or mounting kits have worked best for your Grand Cherokee?
Similar situation here! I snagged the Yakima JetStream Black 50 inch for $490. The clearance is GREAT, basically zero glass contact, and it didnt scuff the chrome rails at all. Its super quiet too!
In my experience, Yakima JetStream Black 50 inch beats Thule WingBar Edge for the Summit. Yakima gives way better sunroof clearance so you wont crack the glass or scuff the chrome!! 👍
Honestly, I spent way too much time obsessing over the market data for these racks before pulling the trigger on my Summit. I looked at everything from the Thule WingBar Edge to some of the lesser-known Aussie brands. Prices have shot up like 20% lately, right?? I was super cautious because the replacement cost for that panoramic glass is terrifying if something goes wrong. I eventually did a deep dive into the Rhino-Rack Vortex ROC25 flush system. Tbh, it’s a bit of a sleeper pick compared to the big two. I found that while Yakima is the 'safe' bet everyone mentions, you can often find the Rhino-Rack setup for about $100 less if you shop around the specialized off-road sites instead of the big box retailers. It uses a different mounting logic that really grips the inner track of the chrome rails without wrapping around the outside, which was a huge relief for my paint/finish anxiety. So basically, if you’re trying to stay well under that $700 ceiling, it’s worth checking the price-to-weight ratios on those too. Just my two cents from a long research rabbit hole!!!
