Hey everyone! I finally took delivery of my Jeep Recon recently, and while I’m absolutely loving the electric performance and that open-air feel, the exterior is looking a little too 'stock' for my taste. I really want to lean into that rugged, trail-ready aesthetic without going overboard or ruining the aerodynamics too much since it is an EV.
I’ve been scouring various sites, but since the Recon is still relatively fresh on the scene, I’m finding it a bit tough to figure out which exterior accessories are actually worth the investment and which ones fit the lines of the body the best. I’m particularly interested in things that add a bit of personality—maybe some high-quality fender flares, more aggressive-looking grille inserts, or even some sleek hood decals to break up the flat paint. I’m also looking for recommendations on side steps or rock sliders that don't just look tough but actually provide some decent door ding protection in parking lots.
My budget is around $1,500 for the first round of upgrades. I’ve already considered some basic window tints, but I want the actual hardware to stand out. I’m a bit worried about some of the cheaper aftermarket stuff not holding up to car washes or fading under the sun, so I’d prefer parts that have a solid reputation for durability. I’m also curious if anyone has found a specific roof rack system that looks integrated rather than just 'bolted on.'
For those of you who have started modding your Recon, what have been your favorite exterior styling additions so far? Are there any specific brands you’d swear by, or any 'must-have' accessories that totally changed the look of your rig?
I went through this last year with my own build and honestly, I was sooo worried about the range hit from bulky mods. I ended up trying the Teraflex Nomad Off-Road Wheels because they look tough without being crazy heavy, which is key for an EV right? For the grille, I actually found that adding Quake LED Jeep Recon Grille Accents gave it that aggressive vibe without blocking airflow to the batteries. It’s all about those small technical tweaks that don't ruin the aerodynamics tbh!
yo congrats on the new ride!! i honestly love the recon so much. i guess for that trail-ready vibe on a budget, i'd totally go with the Go Rhino RB20 Slim Line Side Steps cuz they're basically rock sliders but way cheaper and protect against door dings lol. plus, some Mopar Matte Black Hood Graphic decals are like $100 and really break up that flat paint. gl!!
Can vouch for this
Soo first off, a big warning: stay away from the cheap no-name plastic grille inserts or flares you see on discount sites. Honestly, I had issues with a set that literally turned a weird chalky gray after three months in the sun. Not as good as expected and basically a waste of cash... definitely not the 'investment' you want.
Since you're on a $1,500 budget, here is how I’d break it down:
* **Decals vs. Hardware:** Go for high-quality vinyl hood wraps instead of bulky flares. They add personality and break up the paint without the weight or aero drag that kills EV range.
* **Steel vs. Aluminum Sliders:** Steel is cheaper but heavy. For a Recon, I’d spend the extra on heavy-duty aluminum sliders. They protect against door dings just as well but wont tank your battery miles as much.
* **Integrated Racks:** Skip the bolt-on crossbars and look for a low-profile platform rack. It looks way more integrated, though it's a bit pricier.
I've definately learned the hard way that saving 50 bucks on cheap hardware ends up costing more later. gl!
