I recently picked up a Jeep Wrangler 4xe, and while I absolutely love the electric torque off-road, I’m finding the standard Level 1 charger that came with it a bit too slow for my daily needs. I’m looking for a reliable portable EV charger that I can keep in the back for road trips or use at home when I don't want to rely on the basic wall outlet. Since the 4xe has a 17.3 kWh battery, I’m trying to find something that can handle Level 2 speeds (240V) to get that full charge in about 2-3 hours rather than 12+.
I’ve been looking at options like the Grizzl-E Mini or the Schumacher portable units, but I’m worried about compatibility with the Jeep's J1772 port or if some brands play nicer with the 4xe software than others. My budget is around $300-$500, and durability is a huge factor for me since it’ll likely get tossed around in the trunk. Does anyone have experience with a specific portable charger that fits perfectly in the floor storage cubby and handles outdoor weather well? Which portable Level 2 charger have you found works most reliably with the Wrangler 4xe system without triggering any charging faults?
Seconding the recommendation above for looking beyond the basic 16A units! While those work, I've spent a lot of time researching the safety side of things for the 4xe, and tbh you really gotta be careful with the cheaper unbranded stuff on Amazon cuz of the heat they generate during a 2-3 hour Level 2 session.
Since ur looking for durability and software compatibility, here are two solid options that actually stay within your budget and are way more reliable:
* Schumacher SC1455 16/40A Level 2 Portable EV Charger - This one is super robust and basically a tank. It handles outdoor weather really well, though the cable is a bit thick, so it's a tight squeeze in the floor cubby.
* Grizzl-E Mini 40A Portable EV Charger - Honestly, this is probably your best bet. It’s specifically designed for tough environments and the internal components are high-quality, so you wont get those annoying charging faults that some 4xe owners report with cheaper chips.
Ok so, just a heads up—if ur gonna run these at Level 2 speeds (40A), make sure ur home outlet and wiring are actually rated for it. Safety first!! gl with the new Jeep, it's a blast off-road! 👍
> I’m looking for a reliable portable EV charger that I can keep in the back for road trips... My budget is around $300-$500
Hmm, I've had a different experience when it comes to those 16A chargers. Respectfully, I'd consider another option because 16 amps is basically the bare minimum for Level 2. If you're gonna spend the money, you might as well max out the Wrangler's 32A onboard charger so you're actually hitting that 2-hour window consistently, especially if you ever upgrade to a full BEV later.
In my experience, the Grizzl-E Mini Portable EV Charger 40 Amp J1772 is the way to go. It's built like a TANK and handles the outdoor weather better than the cheaper plastic units. It’s a bit more than the Lectron, but it’s adjustable and way more durable for off-road tossing around. Another solid choice is the Schumacher SC1455 Level 2 Portable EV Charger 16/50A which is super reliable with Jeep's software. Honestly, I'd rather have the extra headroom. I mean, why settle for half speed? lol. gl with the 4xe!
yo! honestly, i literally just got the Lectron Level 2 Portable EV Charger 240V 16A J1772 and it's basically been amazing for my 4xe. it fits *perfectly* in that floor cubby too! i mean, it actually hits those Level 2 speeds you want, charging mine in like 2-ish hours. plus, it's super rugged for being tossed around... definitely recommend it!! 👍
To add to the point above: I agree that stepping up to a 32A unit is the only way to consistently hit those 2-hour charge times. I have been very satisfied with the Webasto Go Dual Voltage Portable EV Charger because it is actually the same manufacturer Jeep uses for their official Mopar equipment. It is UL-listed and handles the 240V load without any heat issues or software glitches. It fits perfectly in the floor storage cubby and the build quality is far superior to most of the stuff you find online. Another solid option is the Grizzl-E Mini 40A Portable EV Charger which is incredibly rugged and designed for harsh weather. It works well with the 4xe software and has a very heavy-duty cable that doesnt get stiff in the cold. Both are within your budget and provide the reliability you need when you are away from home. No complaints here... sticking with established names is definitely the safest bet for the battery long-term. Realistically you dont want to gamble with your electrical system just to save fifty bucks.
Big if true
Honestly I gotta say I am pretty disappointed with most of the portable stuff I have tried lately. Everyone talks about how rugged these units are but unfortunately I had issues with a few different brands just last year... they just dont feel as solid as they used to and the software seems to glitch if the sun even looks at the plug wrong.
