Hey everyone! I recently joined the club and picked up a new Land Rover Defender. I’m absolutely loving the drive so far, but after a few close calls with some aggressive drivers in the city and a weekend trip out on the trails, I’ve realized that I definitely need to get a high-quality dash cam setup installed as soon as possible.

Because the Defender has such a unique design, I’m finding it a bit tricky to choose the right model. One of my main concerns is the very vertical orientation of the front windshield. I’ve noticed that some of the more common wedge-shaped cameras seem to sit at a weird angle on flat glass, which might mess up the field of view or just look bulky from the outside. I’m really looking for something sleek that won’t clutter up that beautiful dashboard view.

Another specific challenge is the rear-view situation. Since I have the full-sized spare tire mounted on the back door, I’m worried about where to mount a rear-facing camera. If I put it on the glass inside, will the tire block half the footage? Or should I be looking for an external-mounted camera that can handle a bit of mud and dust when I’m off-roading?

I’ve been leaning toward something with 4K resolution because I’d love to capture some of the scenery on my trips, and a reliable 'parking mode' is a must-have for me since I often have to park on the street. I’ve looked at the BlackVue DR900X and some of the Garmin Mini models for their size, but I’m worried about the hardwiring process with the Defender’s sensitive electrical system. I really want to avoid any 'battery discharge' warnings or warranty issues.

For those of you who have already rigged up your rigs, what are the top-rated dash cams you’d recommend specifically for the Defender? Did you go with a professional install to hide the wires, and how did you work around the spare tire for the rear coverage?

TL;DR: Go with a compact tube-style cam and an external rear mount. Sooo I was looking at this earlier and honestly, the Defender windshield is such a pain for most cams. I'm a bit of a newbie but I tried the Garmin Dash Cam Mini 2 because it's tiny, but it kinda struggled with the vertical glass angle. Actually, I'd suggest the Vantrue N4 Pro 3 Channel 4K Dash Cam for quality, but since ur worried about the spare tire, maybe look into an external setup? I've seen some guys mount the Wolfbox G840S 12" 4K Mirror Dash Cam camera outside near the license plate to avoid the tire blockage entirely. It’s safer for the electronics too if u get a pro to wire it, right?

Seconding the recommendation above regarding the battery pack! In my experience, the Defender's electrical system is super touchy, so a dedicated battery is basically a requirement if you want parking mode without the dashboard lighting up like a Christmas tree. But honestly, if you're looking for value, you don't always have to drop $600+. I've tried many setups over the years, and for that vertical windshield, the VIOFO A139 Pro 2-Channel Dash Cam with 4K Sony STARVIS 2 Sensor is a killer alternative to the BlackVue. It's got a slim, tube-like profile that fits perfectly on flat glass without looking bulky. Plus, you get that 4K clarity for your trail vids at a much better price point. For the rear, definitely dont mount it inside if you have the spare tire—it blocks everything. I'd grab the VIOFO Waterproof Rear Camera for A139 Pro and mount it high on the exterior near the brake light. Just grab a SanDisk 256GB MAX Endurance microSDXC Card UHS-I V30 to handle the constant 4K rewriting. TL;DR: Go with the Viofo A139 Pro for the best bang-for-your-buck 4K setup and mount the rear cam externally to clear the tire. gl! 👍

Honestly, I've had a few issues with the Land Rover electrical system being super touchy. For your situation, I'd suggest looking at a BlackVue setup, but seriously, get a dedicated battery pack like the Power Magic Ultra Battery to avoid those annoying discharge warnings. It basically bypasses the main battery for parking mode. For the rear, I actually mounted my camera high on the interior glass and it clears the spare tire just fine, you know?
