Which snorkel should I install on my Land Rover Series III?

I’m finally getting around to prepping my Series III for some deeper wading, but I’m torn on which snorkel setup to go with. Since it’s a classic, I want something that looks period-correct but actually functions well with the 2.25L engine. I’ve seen some generic plastic tops and the traditional galvanized mushroom styles, but I'm worried about fitment issues with the wing top or blocking the air intake flow too much. Has anyone here installed a Mantec or a custom pipe recently? I’m looking for a balance between durability for dusty trails and that iconic Landy look. Does anyone have a specific brand recommendation that fits the SIII wings without too much cutting?

sooo i stumbled upon this discussion and i mean, the Mantec is cool and all but since you're worried about the 2.25L air flow and cutting the wing, i’d be super cautious about going too cheap with a custom setup. i'm still kinda new to this but i basically spent hours researching budget-friendly options that wont kill the engine performance. You might find this useful—check out Allmakes 4x4 Series III Raised Air Intake Kit. it’s a bit more wallet-friendly than some high-end brands but it still looks period-correct. Honestly, i guess my main concern for you is the sealing part. even with a good snorkel, if the air box isnt watertight, it’s basically just for show lol. Make sure to look into Wurth Black Silicone Adhesive Sealant for the joints because if any water seeps in there, it’s game over for the engine. i would suggest checking the forums at LandyZone too... they have some great technical diagrams for the SIII wing dimensions so you dont mess up the cut. just be careful and double check everything before you drill! gl!

Honestly, I've been there and it's kinda frustrating. For your situation, I would suggest going with the Mantec Series Land Rover Raised Air Intake. I tried a cheaper custom pipe setup once but it was a total mess and didn't fit the wing right.

* Mantec Series III Steel Snorkel - Classic look, usually around $250.
* Land Rover Series Galvanized Mushroom Cyclone Top - Best for that period-correct style.

Unfortunately, the Mantec one still needs a bit of drilling, which sucked tbh, but it's way better than some generic plastic crap that'll just crack. Anyway, hope that helps! Cheers.

Honestly, I'm still pretty new to the Landy scene but I just went through this exact headache with my SIII 2.25L last month. I was super stressed about the wing-top fitment because those panels aren't exactly uniform after 40-some years. Basically, I found out that the outside pipe is the easy part—the real nightmare is the internal plumbing between the wing and the air cleaner. A few things I learned the hard way:
- The flexi-hose connection inside the engine bay is way more prone to leaking than the actual snorkel body.
- If you don't line up the hole perfectly with the internal bracket, it puts weird tension on the wing skin and can actually cause it to ripple.
- My current setup had some weird whistling at high revs because the diameter of the intake pipe wasn't quite matching the carb intake. I'm still trying to figure out if I need to redo the sealing on the heater intake too since they're so close. Does anyone know if that affects the vacuum pressure much? Anyway, just make sure you triple-measure before you start drilling into that wing!

jumping in here because i was literally just looking at this. tbh i'm kinda terrified of cutting into my wing since they're so hard to replace if you mess it up. someone at a local meet told me that even if you get the snorkel on, if the internal seals aren't 100 percent airtight, you're basically just driving around with a false sense of security while water creeps in anyway... iirc there was a guy on another forum who said his 2.25 engine felt way more sluggish after the install, like it couldn't breathe right. idrk if that's true or just bad luck but it's making me hesitate. i'm really worried about the compatibility between these modern kits and the original air cleaners too. like, does it even seal properly at that end? i'd hate to ruin a perfectly good engine just because i wanted it to look cool for river crossings i might not even do that often.

Came here to say the same thing lol. Great minds think alike I guess.
