So I am in a bit of a panic because my 2012 Camry finally gave up the ghost yesterday and the shop says it is not worth fixing so I need a car like, yesterday. I have been looking at the ES 350 maybe from 2021 and I am torn between going to the Lexus dealer for a CPO or just finding one on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. My budget is capped at $38k and the CPO ones here in Jersey are all pushing that limit or over it while private sellers are way cheaper.
I did some digging online and everyone keeps saying the L/Certified warranty is the best in the business because it covers basically everything for two years with unlimited miles but then I see other folks saying it is just a huge markup for a fancy inspection you could pay a mechanic $150 to do anyway. My logic was that Lexus is super reliable so why pay the extra 4 or 5 grand for a warranty I might never use? But then I am scared I will buy a lemon from some guy in a parking lot and be stuck with no car and no money.
I need to pull the trigger by Monday at the latest to get to work. Does the certified tag actually mean they fixed stuff or is it just a marketing gimmick to sell me an extended warranty at a higher price point? I am just spiraling a bit here...
Honestly, I have been a Lexus guy for twenty years and the L/Certified program is absolutely amazing! I bought a 2021 Lexus ES 350 Ultra Luxury last year and it has been a dream. People think the markup is just for the name, but my dealer replaced the entire brake assembly and the tires before I even took delivery because they didnt meet the strict CPO standards. You wont get that kind of service from some random guy on Craigslist, believe me! Heres my take on why the extra cash is worth it:
TL;DR: CPO ensures the high-pressure fuel system was maintained. Re: "Honestly, I have been a Lexus guy for..." - definitely. Technically, the Lexus ES 350 3.5L V6 2GR-FKS engine needs documented oil changes to keep VVT-i solenoids clean. Private sales are gambles on sludge. If 38k is firm, compare a private 350 against a CPO Lexus ES 250 AWD 2.5L. You get lower displacement but keep the warranty and verified maintenance records.
I totally get the panic... I went the private route once thinking I was being smart about my budget. Bought an older IS and thought I was saving 4k. Turned out the seller had just cleared a check engine light for a faulty sensor that cost me a fortune later. If you are gonna skip the CPO and go private to stay under $38k, you have to be super cautious about the hidden costs. Lexus parts are pricey once you get into the tech side. Here is what I would do to protect yourself:
