Hey everyone! I finally took delivery of my new Lexus NX 450h+ last week and I am absolutely loving the transition to plug-in hybrid life. So far, I have just been using the standard Level 1 cable that came with the car, but it is definitely a slow process for a full charge. I am planning to have a Level 2 charger installed in my garage soon, but I realized I might need more than just the wall unit itself.

Since this is my first time owning a vehicle with a plug, I am a bit overwhelmed by the variety of accessories out there. I want to make sure the setup is clean and efficient. I have been looking at a few specific things:

  • Cable organizers or wall-mounted holsters to keep the J1772 connector off the ground
  • Weatherproof port covers since I occasionally have to charge outside in the driveway
  • Specialized cleaning cloths for the glossy charging door area

I really want to avoid clutter in the garage and make sure the charging port stays protected from the elements when I am not inside. Does anyone have specific brands or must-have items they recommend for the NX? What charging accessories have actually made your daily routine easier?

Adding my two cents here... Congrats on the NX! One thing to keep in mind is the NX 450h+ has a 6.6 kW onboard charger, so you really only need a 32-amp EVSE to hit max speeds. For cable management, honestly, I just use a heavy-duty metal garden hose hook from the hardware store. It is cheaper and way more durable than those plastic clips. Since the NX rear fender area is mostly composite/plastic, those magnetic port covers wont stick. Look for the EVSE Adapters EV Charge Port Weather Shield Suction Cup instead, it stays put much better. For the glossy door, I just use Meguiars Supreme Shine Microfiber Towels with some quick detailer spray to keep it from scratching. If you havent picked your wall unit yet, the Grizzl-E Classic Level 2 EV Charger 40 Amp is a solid, no-frills choice. It is basically bulletproof and handles cold weather great if your garage isnt heated.

Congrats on the new ride! Honestly, the NX 450h+ is a fantastic machine but yeah, that standard Level 1 cable is basically just a trickle charger for an 18.1 kWh battery. You are gonna love the jump to Level 2. For the garage setup, cable management is huge for safety so you dont trip in the dark. I highly recommend the Lectron J1772 Nozzle Holster and Cable Organizer. It is super simple to screw into a stud and it keeps the heavy cable coiled tightly against the wall. It prevents the connector from getting kicked or stepped on which is the main way they break. If you have to charge in the driveway during bad weather, be careful with magnetic covers. Some parts of the NX body are aluminum so magnets wont stick everywhere. I have used the Eco-Fused EV Charging Port Cover Waterproof Magnetic and it works okay if you find a steel spot to grip, but honestly, the J1772 port is designed to drain water. For those glossy black panels around the port, they are total scratch magnets. I always keep a pack of Chemical Guys Professional Grade Premium Microfiber Towels handy to wipe away grit before I touch the door. Nothing worse than grinding dirt into that piano black finish every time you plug in... trust me on that one! Enjoy the new PHEV life, it is a game changer once you get the routine down.

Jumping in here because honestly, I am in the exact same boat and it has been driving me crazy for weeks now. I just took delivery of my NX 450h+ last month and I have been obsessing over the technical specs of these third-party accessories. My biggest worry is the long-term reliability and safety of the charging port itself. Like, is a simple cover really enough to prevent moisture buildup that could lead to arcing or thermal issues during a high-draw Level 2 session? I have spent hours looking at ingress protection ratings and still cannot find anything that feels truly automotive grade for the driveway. It is so frustrating because Lexus is known for reliability, but the aftermarket options for charging protection seem so flimsy and unregulated. I really dont want to risk a short on a brand new vehicle just because I picked the wrong holster or weather shield... basically been stuck in research limbo since day one.
