im really stressing out because my old car finally died and i need to find something reliable for my new commute to jersey city starting in three weeks. everyone i talk to says to get a lexus suv because they last forever but i have no idea where to even start looking without getting totally ripped off. sorry if this is a really basic question but im a total newbie at this and the whole process is making me so anxious. i have about 22000 dollars saved up which i thought was a decent amount but every time i look online it feels like everything is way more expensive than that or has like 200000 miles on it.
so i was thinking maybe i should go to an actual lexus dealership but my logic was that they probably charge way more just because they have the fancy building and free coffee. i tried looking at a few different places so far:
then i looked at craigslist but i keep hearing horror stories about people buying cars that were in floods or had the odometers rolled back so now im too scared to even click on those. am i missing something? like is there a specific website that car people use to find the actual good deals that arent just scams? i really need something like an rx350 or even a smaller ux because my commute is gonna be an hour each way and i just want to be comfortable and safe. but i dont know if 100k miles is a lot for these cars or if i should be looking for something newer with less features. also what even is a certified pre owned car? is it worth the extra few thousand dollars they seem to want for it? i feel like im just spinning my wheels and running out of time before my job starts and i dont want to spend my whole life savings on a lemon...
@Reply #1 - good point! That 2GR-FE engine is basically a tank and handles high mileage well. Since youre worried about getting a lemon for your commute, you should really focus on the technical history instead of just looking at the shiny paint or the price tag.
You're making a fantastic choice with Lexus! For that budget, I'd hunt for a Lexus RX 350 2014-2015 AWD. The 2GR-FE engine is an absolute masterpiece of engineering! Definitely check the Lexus L/Certified inventory online because the 161-point inspection is fantastic. It basically guarantees the car isnt a lemon. You'll love the reliability for that Jersey commute!
Regarding what #2 said about "@Reply #1 - good point! That 2GR-FE engine..." - its definitely a beast, but honestly the market is just total garbage right now for anything with a Lexus badge. I spent months helping my brother hunt for a decent Lexus RX 350 2015 AWD in North Jersey and it was just exhausting. Most of those local small lots near JC or Newark are basically just flipping auction junk with a fresh coat of wax. We checked out three different cars that looked clean but had major oil leaks once we actually got underneath them. I had issues with Carvana too... their inspection missed a failing battery and basically bald tires on a Lexus NX 300 2018 Base. Not as good as expected for the premium they charge you. Tbh if you want to stay under that 22k mark without getting a total high-mileage wreck, stop looking at the big shiny dealerships. They want 25k for stuff that should be 18k and the fees are insane. I would actually look at the Lexus RX 450h 2012 Hybrid if you can find one from a private seller on a site like Autotrader. People sleep on the older hybrids but they save a ton on that Jersey City commute gas which adds up fast. Just make sure the hybrid battery was actually serviced. Ngl, your best bet is finding a single-owner car from some older person in the suburbs who kept every single receipt. Skip the fancy coffee at the dealer, it is basically costing you five grand extra in markup.
