Hey everyone! I just picked up my new CX-90 PHEV and we’re already planning a long family road trip for the summer. With the third row in use, we're definitely going to need some extra storage capacity. I’ve been looking at the flush side rails, but I’m torn between the official Mazda crossbars and aftermarket options like Thule or Yakima. I’m especially concerned about wind noise and how much a bulky cargo box might impact my electric range. Has anyone found a specific setup that fits the CX-90’s proportions well without interfering with the panoramic sunroof? Which roof racks or cargo carriers would you recommend for the best balance of utility and aerodynamics?

Hey! Basically, the Thule WingBar Edge is your best bet for a few reasons: - Its low-profile and super quiet.
- The height ensures zero interference with the panoramic glass. Seriously, pair it with the Thule Motion 3 XL to keep that PHEV range decent... it actually works great! gl!

So basically the consensus is Thule for premium and Yakima for value. Honestly, I had issues with box stability before and it's literally terrifying on the freeway. Safety is SOOO important! Idk if it helps, but I think the Inno Shadow 16 Cargo Box is more secure for long hauls. Unfortunately, some setups just dont feel solid enough. Is the CX-90 roof limit okay?? Better safe than sorry... gl!

Building on the earlier suggestion, those big brands are definitely the standard but i have had some annoying issues in the past. Ngl, I tried the official Mazda bars on my last car and they were just not as good as expected... way too much whistling and they felt kinda flimsy. Unfortunately, it seems like the OEM stuff just doesnt cut it if you want total silence. If you want something that actually feels solid:

  • Stick with anything from Rhino-Rack
  • Look for the more aerodynamic bars from Yakima Honestly, just get a high-quality cargo setup from Thule and you cant go wrong. Avoid those cheap generic brands tho, they always end up rattling after a few months... such a bummer when youre trying to enjoy a quiet PHEV drive.

Sooo, congrats on the CX-90!! I feel u on the range anxiety and the sunroof... it's a huge concern!! I'm pretty sure I heard the Thule bars are way quieter than OEM, and iirc they dont hit your glass. You could also look at Yakima for better aero. Honestly, I think the Thule setup is the way to go... it's just sooo much more sleek and shouldn't kill your range!! gl!

Seconding the recommendation above! Honestly, Thule is king, but if youre looking for better VALUE, I really love the Yakima SkyBox 16 Carbonite. It fits the CX-90 lines sooo well and it's way cheaper! Pair it with Yakima JetStream Crossbars to save cash without all that noise. Centering the box is super important for your range cuz it keeps the airflow smooth... maybe that helps?? gl!!
