Hey everyone! I finally pulled the trigger on a brand new ND2 Miata, and I’m absolutely loving the driving experience so far. It’s such a blast on twisty backroads, but after a few weeks of ownership, I’m starting to get that itch to tweak things just a little bit. Since this is my first Miata, I’m a bit overwhelmed by the options and curious about which performance upgrades actually make the most noticeable difference on this platform.
I’m not trying to build a dedicated track monster just yet—this is still my daily driver—so I really want to keep it civil and street-legal. I’ve noticed the body roll is a bit more than I expected in tight corners, so I’ve been looking into sway bars or maybe a good set of coilovers to sharpen the handling. I’m also considering a more free-flowing exhaust to let that 2.0L engine breathe, but I’m worried about highway drone. I've also heard that switching out the stock tires can be a game-changer for grip and confidence.
What would you guys suggest as the best starting point for someone looking for 'bang for your buck' improvements? If you had to pick the first three mods to install on a stock ND2 to enhance the fun factor without ruining the ride quality, what would they be?
Quick question before I nerd out on the technical specs - are you sticking with the stock 17-inch wheels or going wider?? Ngl, I had issues with the Progress Technology Front Sway Bar early on and it was honestly wayyy too stiff for my daily commute... basically ruined the ride quality. I wanna help, but knowing your wheel plans helps me suggest the right spring rates and stuff. Cheers!
> I’m starting to get that itch to tweak things just a little bit. Ok so, before I give advice, I gotta ask what your ACTUAL budget is? Suspension mods change how the car reacts in emergencies, which is a HUGE safety concern. Unfortunately, I had issues with cheap parts that made my car feel sketchy. Looking to stay under $1,000? I mean, some gear wasnt as good as expected... quality like Michelin Pilot Sport 4S 205/45ZR17 is worth it for the grip
yo, congrats on the ND2!! in my experience, mazda builds these with a lot of "compliance" for daily comfort, which is why they lean so much in corners... basically it's about keeping the car predictable for the average driver. over the years i've seen people go way too aggressive and ruin the ride, so definitely stay cautious. if you want bang-for-buck, i'd suggest better tires, thicker sway bars, and a mild axle-back. but before i give specific picks, what's ur actual budget for this? and honestly, how much highway drone can u actually tolerate?? i've tried many setups and "civil" means something different to everyone. once i have that info i can help u avoid mistakes. anyway, been there and i feel u on that itch to mod!! gl!
honestly i just saw this and felt like i had to jump in... ive spent way too much on things that werent as good as expected, unfortunately. if ur looking for the best bang-for-your-buck without ruining the daily drive, keep it simple. i had issues with over-modding too early and it basically killed the car's soul. here's what i'd suggest:
- **Performance Alignment:** go to a specialist. factory specs are kind of a joke and getting more aggressive camber/toe makes a world of difference for like $150.
- **Tires:** just get any high-end summer tire from [[Michelin]] or [[Continental]]. stock rubber is fine but lacks real confidence.
- **Exhaust:** i tried a cheap setup and the drone was unbearable. just go with any axle-back from [[Good-Win Racing]] or [[Borla]], you cant go wrong with their street stuff. seriously, dont overcomplicate it yet. gl!
