I finally picked up a 2019 MX-5 ND, and while it's an absolute blast stock, I’m looking to add a bit more punch and sharpen the handling for my weekend canyon runs. I'm not trying to build a dedicated track car, but I'd love some recommendations on performance accessories that offer the best 'bang for your buck.' I’ve been looking into getting a set of stiffer sway bars and maybe a high-flow air intake, but I’m torn on which brands actually deliver. I want to keep it reliable since it's still my daily driver. Based on your experience, what are the first few performance mods you’d recommend to really wake this car up?
Here's what I recommend: Honestly, skip the intake cuz the stock ND airbox is actually really efficient. If u want better handling, literally just get the Progress Technology Front and Rear Sway Bar Kit. It flat-out deletes that floppy factory body roll. I've run 'em for 2 years now... best bang for buck mod, seriously!! Plus, some Koni Sport Yellow Shocks will highkey transform the damping... dont sleep on 'em. gl!
So, i'm kinda new to this but I've realy focused on safety after a scary brake fade incident. Honestly, I'd compare these for canyon runs:
- Goodridge Stainless Steel Brake Line Kit 12224: Gives a much firmer, safer pedal feel than stock rubber.
- Hawk Performance HPS 5.0 Brake Pads: Better bite than OEM without being too loud for a daily.
I had issues with generic pads failing, so definately upgrade these first... peace
Building on the earlier suggestion, I would suggest you be really careful if you decide to mess with the shift feel. A lot of people jump straight to a short shifter, but if you dont install something like the CravenSpeed ND Short Shifter perfectly, you risk grinding gears or putting extra stress on the synchros. Its a great DIY project, but you need to make sure to use high-temp grease and double-check the alignment during the install. Another thing to consider is unsprung weight. Everyone talks about power, but heavy wheels kill the NDs agility. I might want to consider looking at the Konig Hypergram 17x8 since theyre flow-formed and incredibly light for the price. Just be careful with your offset choices tho. If you go too low, youre gonna end up rubbing the fender liners during hard canyon runs, which is a total pain to fix. Also, watch out for any stage 1 tunes that claim massive gains without a dyno sheet. On the ND2 engine, you really wont see much without physical headers, and you risk throwing a CEL or failing your next emissions test. Basically, keep it simple and dont rush into the heavy stuff yet.
> what are the first few performance mods youd recommend to really wake this car up? Quick reply while I have a sec... honestly, in my experience, you should focus on the tires before doing anything else. Ive tried many different brands over the years but you just cant go wrong with Michelin if you want that extra confidence in the corners. It literally changes the entire personality of the car. Also, if you want a bit more character, just get any exhaust setup from Goodwin Racing. Theyve basically perfected the Miata sound and their stuff is super high quality. Dont worry too much about the tiny details yet, just getting better rubber and a bit more noise makes it feel like a whole new beast. Youre gonna have a blast with it regardless tho!
Watch out for "cold air" intakes, seriously. I went through this last year and found mine just sucked in engine bay heat, which killed my timing once things got hot... I learned that the hard way lol. Spent way too much on engine bits before realizing a simple aggressive alignment was what actually woke the car up for my canyon runs! Have u looked into ur local alignment shops yet?
^ This. Also, tires and an aggressive alignment are literally the foundation. In my experience over the years, if you want more punch without going forced induction, you should look at the manifold. Go with any header from BBR GTI High Performance Exhaust, you cant go wrong with their R&D. I've tried many setups and they always deliver a nice bump in the mid-range. Since its your daily, you might want a bit more sound too. Just get any exhaust from HKS Exhaust Series and you'll be set. It gives that nice deep tone without being obnoxious on the highway. Glad to see you're building it right... let me know if you need help with the install steps!
