I need to know what exterior accessories are actually essential for a new Mazda3 Hatchback because I'm picking mine up on Friday and the salesperson is breathing down my neck to finalize the add-ons by tomorrow morning. I've been obsessing over this for weeks but I'm still totally stuck on a couple things and the clock is ticking.

So I'm getting the 2024 Turbo in Soul Red - stunning color but man I'm terrified of rock chips - and I'm located in the Pacific Northwest so rain and mud are a constant thing. I have about $1,200 to $1,500 left in my budget for extra stuff but I don't want to waste it on things that are just for show or that actually make the car worse to drive. I've been looking at the OEM roof rack bars because I do a lot of mountain biking and I need a way to get my bike to the trails, but then I read on some other forum that the wind noise is unbearable above 60mph and it totally ruins the premium feel of the interior. Is that true or are people just being dramatic?

Then there's the aero kit. It looks so good in the photos but I'm worried about the front air dam and the side sills making the car too low. My driveway has a bit of an incline and I really don't want to hear that soul-crushing scrape every time I come home. Some people online say it only drops the clearance by like half an inch but others say they've already cracked theirs on a curb or a steep parking lot entrance. If the aero kit is just going to get shredded on the hilly roads in Seattle then maybe I should just skip it and put that money toward something else?

I also saw those splash guards but they look kinda small? Do they actually protect the paint from all the grit we get on the roads here or should I just look into some beefier aftermarket ones like Rally Armor? I'm also debating the window deflectors but I've heard mixed things about how they install and if they mess with the auto-up window sensors. I just want the car to be functional for my hobbies without ruining the look or making it a pain to live with daily...

Unfortunately, you're right to worry... that Soul Red is notoriously thin. I had high hopes for the Mazda OEM Roof Rack Crossbars but the wind noise is honestly a letdown once you hit 60. It's not just people being dramatic, it really kills that premium feel you're paying for. The aero kit is another one that's not as great as expected. It's mostly plastic and you'll definitely scrape it on a steep driveway. Skip it and those tiny OEM splash guards. They barely do anything for PNW mud. I'd grab the Rally Armor UR Mud Flaps for 2019+ Mazda 3 Hatchback instead for actual protection. If you've got $1,500, seriously just put it toward XPEL Ultimate Plus Paint Protection Film for the front end. It's much more essential than trim that's gonna get trashed by Seattle roads anyway.
