I recently picked up a new Mazda CX-90 PHEV, and while I love the quiet electric drive, my family needs more cargo space for our upcoming camping trips. I’m looking for a roof rack setup that won’t significantly impact my EV range or create too much wind noise. I've been eyeing the Thule WingBar Evos, but I'm curious if the OEM crossbars from Mazda are a better fit for the flush rails. Also, I’m a bit worried about clearance for the panoramic sunroof when the rack is installed. Has anyone here found a specific system that stays aerodynamic and doesn't interfere with the glass? Which roof rack brand or model are you currently using on your CX-90 PHEV?
> I'm curious if the OEM crossbars from Mazda are a better fit for the flush rails. In my experience, Mazda CX-90 Genuine Roof Rack Crossbars (Option A) win over Thule WingBar Evo (Option B) for sunroof clearance. OEM is way more aerodynamic, which helps ur EV range. I also looked at Yakima JetStream Crossbars (Option C), but they sat too high. Honestly, the OEM ones are quieter and fit the flush rails *perfectly*. Best choice for the PHEV imo!
Seconding the recommendation above! honestly, safety is everything. i've had issues with universal clamps loosening on the highway—lowkey terrifying. if you don't want the OEM ones, try the Yakima JetStream Black 60" Crossbars with Yakima SkyLine Towers. they use a landing pad system that's way more reliable for flush rails than some other things i've tried. unfortunately, some Thule kits sit too low for the glass, but these give you a better safety gap tho. gl!!
Curious about one thing: are you planning to leave the rack on all the time, or just for the camping trips? If it's just for trips, you might save some cash going with a simpler setup. So, I'm pretty new to the CX-90 world and honestly, I was terrified of breaking that panoramic glass. I ended up getting the Yakima JetStream Crossbars 60 inch with the Yakima SkyLine Towers because I wanted something reliable without spending Thule-level money. I'm really happy with how it turned out tho! The wind noise is barely there, and I haven't noticed a huge hit to my electric miles. I still feel a bit nervous when I open the sunroof lol, but it clears the bars just fine. If you want a budget-friendly pick, maybe look at Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars? Just make sure to double check the mounting points cuz safety is priority #1!! gl with the search!
Sooo, before u dive into buying anything, u gotta understand how drag affects the CX-90's efficiency. Basically, any rack adds wind resistance, which highkey matters for ur EV range. In my experience, finding that balance between height and aerodynamics is the real trick for the panoramic sunroof. Heres how my setup has been working out: - I actually chose a non-OEM system that sits just a bit higher than the factory bars. This was crucial because I was worried about the glass hitting the clamps when it tilts up... and it fits perfectly!
- The noise level is literally nonexistent at city speeds, and only a slight hum on the highway, which is what u want in a quiet PHEV.
- Cost-wise, I saved a few hundred bucks by avoiding the dealership markup, and the value proposition is way better imo. Basically, look for a wing-style bar. They're more aerodynamic than round or square ones, so they wont kill ur battery life as much. GL!
